This Friday the Topanga Peace Alliance presents 5 Broken Cameras, a classic documentary presenting an intimate look at the hope and despair of life in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. When his fourth son, Gibreel, is born in 2005, self-taught cameraman Emad Burnat, a Palestinian villager, gets his first camera. At the same time in his village of Bil'in, the Israelis begin bulldozing village olive groves to build a barrier to separate Bil'in from a Jewish settlement. The barrier's route cuts off 60% of Bil'in farmland. In response, the villagers start holding non-violent protests each Friday against this seizure of more of their land by the settlers.
During the next five years, Burnat films this struggle, which is led by two of his best friends including his brother Iyad. At the same time, Burnat uses the camera to record the growth of his son.
“5 Broken Cameras…presents with overwhelming power a case of injustice on a massive scale and gives us a direct experience of what it's like to be on the receiving end of oppression and dispossession, administered by the unyielding, stony-faced representatives of those convinced of their own righteousness. But it isn't vindictive and has a sense of history and destiny. Much may be concealed, but what we are shown and experience is the resilient spirit of one village recorded by a single observer.”
