What a diverse grab bag of right-wing think pieces from one of our favorite guest posters. I read all three articles. I was rather surprised that some people thought FDR's New Deal was a failure: Not me. I grew up surrounded by them in the late '50's and the 60's when the U.S.A. was in the midst of the best economy for the middle class in this nation's history. A lot of Republicans who called for the repeal of Social Security went nuts when Medicare was introduced. But they lived long enough to appreciate both benefits. Since George W. floated his privatization plan in 2005, Republicans cannot even suggest scaling back either program without suffering politically. So they turned to their racist roots to stay in power. As an origin story, I recommend PBS' recent two-hour "American Masters" episode about William F. Buckley. He and Reagan and Goldwater gave up trying to end New Deal social programs and set the GOP on its current path downhill into authoritarianism. Yet they would be horrified if they saw what their party has become.
