The Memorial Day event this morning was excellent. Bruce created a beautiful. eco-friendly, floral tribute, reusing last year's basket. Jeanne (who also attended this morning) will plant the zinnia, alyssium, and in her garden again this year after their week at the memorial. She made a lovely tag inscribed, I believe, "Remember honor hope" and signed, Montrose Peace Vigil. By the way the Vietnam memorial does not include the word "war" anywhere so I resist adding it. I haven't given up my windmill-tilting quest to have it officially named the "Vietnam Peace Memorial", since we are at peace now with Vietnam and as we say in the library biz, the future is longer than the past. Glendale Mayor Laura Friedman's remarks included a nice reference to peace, which got a good round of applause, as did "Montrose Peace Vigil" when we presented our flowers. After I asked Her Honor about the U.S. Conference of Mayors campaign to "Bring the War $$$ home" ( codepinkalert.org/section.php?id=429 ) and she reacted quite positively. Stay tuned for developments and ways to help! Oh, and as I set off walking home, Vito ("Impeach Senator Reid!") Canelli , stopped me to shake my hand, put his arm around my shoulders and spoke fondly of respect for local diversity! Weird, yet wonderful. Maybe Jeanne will chime in with her perspective on the morning. And Bruce!!!!

The Memorial Day event this morning was excellent. Maybe Jeanne will chime in with her perspective on the morning. And Bruce!!!! It was very heartening to hear the mayor's comment for peace. Refreshing change from the "they chose to die for our freedom" comments. There was a very sweet moment early on when Vito said some ponderous things about the flag and asked us to salute it and looked up and it wasn't up there yet. I like to think he might have felt what we do on Friday nights. Perhaps I project.
