As you can see in that photo of the Picture Peace banner in Anni's post, at least three people are needed to display it on the corner -- last Monday, it was Jim, Jeanne and Roberta. Some of our group used to hang it from an overpass of the 210 freeway until the California Highway Patrol finally took exception. I've worn those big orange foam peace signs over the freeway and on the corner, so I'd love to return for another festive weekday afternoon. Somebody, please post news of the next banner event.
The first regular Montrose Peace Vigil of May attracted 14 demonstrators this Friday, including Sheri and Shala, friends of Roberta who walked by, stopped to talk and joined in. I'm also counting the kindergarten age girl holding the Schools Not War sign.

Your wish is our command, Brian!
The banner will be deployed at our regular corner this Tuesday (10th) for an hour beginning at 4:03. (Why :03? Ask Bruce ... if he shows!)
In addition to the freeway overpass which we all miss bannering on, Jeanne and I experimented earlier this spring with a wide sidewalk on Brand in downtown Glendale directly across the street from the Americana. Very different dynamic and demographics, plus lots of traffic and pedestrians. (Would that locale ever work for you Brian?)
However this Tuesday our bannering is followed directly by my going to Glendale City Council in support of Mayors for Peace, so I need to stay in Montrose since I may be carpooling with other peaceniks down to the meeting.

That's too bad -- the earliest I could make it would be 5:04. Seriously, thank you, Roberta. Please keep us informed of future banner deployments. You never know who might show up. Wow, I really like that idea. I can reach Glendale quickly from work, the later in the afternoon the better for me, though I could arrange an earlier departure with enough notice. Maybe we could all go to dinner afterwards at any of the many restaurants in the area.

I got to the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue for the Montrose Peace Vigil this Friday evening in time to see the Google Street View car -- a Prius with the Google logo on the door and a 360-degree camera topping a tower on the roof that generates the images you can see on Google Maps of locations worldwide. The guy driving waved at us as he turned the corner. Perhaps someday the Montrose Peace Vigil will be part of the official digital panorama. Ten stalwarts participated this week. Cynthia was downtown with thousands of other teachers protesting budget cuts in a mass rally in Pershing Square, but Louisa was back with us -- and it was great to connect with our old friend Joyce, driving by at the end of her workday and our vigil. Besides the news, the main topic was this post-vigil event in two weeks: montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk2&action=display&thread=187&page=1

When a doomsday wacko and the Sperminator dominate the news, I think it's more important than ever to stand for peace on a busy street corner and reach out to everyone passing by. The weather was mild, but not the reactions from people on wheels and feet for this Friday's vigil. Our attendance so far this month: - May 6 - 14
- May 13 - 10
- May 20 - 11
I've been looking forward to next Friday, May 27. Right after the vigil, the Read and Practice Peacemaking group -- which includes many regulars of Montrose Peace Vigil -- is hosting a special dinner and DVD viewing at the nearby Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. We're getting ready in this thread: montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk2&action=display&thread=187&page=1

And following just 2 days after our regular vigil, the banner people, Jim, Bruce and I, minus Jeanne off on a church retreat in Pacific Palisades, took the beautiful blue dove of peace to the Montrose Sunday market for an hour.
Great peaceful minds seemed to be converging, cause Nancy cruised by, saw us and joined for 1/2 an hr. Joyce Wolfe -- our friend from Hollywood marches, the Peace Train, and big honks every week near 7 on her way home from work -- was coffeeing across the street with a friend, and they both stopped by for a visit, then Joyce stayed after her friend departed. A good time was had by all.
The new Sunday crowd seemed a little subdued, didn't exactly know what to make of us perhaps.
I'm told Time Magazine now says let's get out of Afghanistan, that's good enough for me and should be for everyone, we all decided today!

Brian and anni are bringing pizza, Roberta - salad from her very own peace victory garden. We'll have coffee, soft drinks, dessert, and POPCORN! It looks like we're expecting about 8 people or more if you message reading peacenicks want to join in.

Brisk holiday weekend traffic on the sidewalks and streets greeted more stalwarts than usual this Friday: - May 6 - 14
- May 13 - 10
- May 20 - 11
- May 27 - 14
May's attendance averaged 12.25 participants per week, just a fraction of a peacenik more than the first four months of the year. We also averaged a dozen for 11 out of the 12 months of 2010. Thanks to Jeanne, Paige and the other members of the Read and Practice Peacemaking group for inviting us to their wonderful documentary screening at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church after the vigil. Roberta and Bruce will again represent Montrose Peace Vigil at the shopping park association's Memorial Day ceremony on same the corner we gather every week, in front of the Vietnam War memorial. Bruce's father served there. I heard that start time is 7:45 Monday morning.
