Now there's just two weeks until the fourth annual Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls fundraiser on Saturday, November 12, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, one of my favorite places to hang out locally with some of the nicest people around. I added the link to the C.V. Empty Bowls official website in Anni's post above -- here's their Facebook Wall: www.facebook.com/cvemptybowls?v=wall

When I spoke with Jeanne at the vigil last Friday, she had just finished glazing one large last batch of bowls for the Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls fundraiser on Saturday, November 12. Then she went home and wrote on the event's Facebook page, "Time to think about soup now." This page on the cvemptybowls.org website names some intriguing choices by local chefs and lists the restaurants that are contributing so far: www.cvemptybowls.org/food.html

There will not be any pie at Empty Bowls Maybe a little piety, though. Here's a link to the updated figures on last year's donation. cvemptybowls.org/hunger.html

Near the end of the fourth annual Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls, I overheard the nice gentleman at the ticket table telling Pastor Paige that he collected more money than tickets sold. Earlier, they ran out of tickets but filled in by using those left over from last year. I would guess that more than half of the 800 bowls in stock Saturday afternoon are in loving homes tonight. Once a year, the members of Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church run the best restaurant in town, serving soup and bread from some of finest local restaurants and chefs, and then washing the bowl for you. And every year, we love hearing from Rev. Patricia O'Reilly about the work of Friends in Deed in Pasadena, one of the three charities benefiting from Empty Bowls: www.ecpac.net/Anni and I missed everyone from Montrose Peace Vigil and Glendale Peace Vigil who came and left before us, sometime around 6:15. We saw Roberta's name all over the silent auction lists, but Anni won Linda's bejeweled birdhouse for $50. Roberta got to Michael before us, and it sounds like he'll be marching with the Peace Train again in the Montrose Christmas Parade -- as will Mary and Carly, we're happy to report. Even more tangentially, Susan told me that she had just posted comments to the letter Roberta wrote in the Crescenta Valley Weekly about the removal of the American flag during our vigil -- they're beautiful: www.crescentavalleyweekly.com/viewpoints/11/10/2011/letters-to-the-editor-69/

We got there as Roberta and John were finishing up but Roberta stayed to chat with us for a while before heading off to Disney Hall. Nancy moved tables to join us and Michael (I believe, I may not have the right face/name combination - memory fades). Excellent food, music and company and now we have two more beautiful bowls. Where's the springtime Salad Bar so we can get some handmade salad plates to go with them?

It was great to have so many peaceniks in the room. Bruce was also there with a friend. Jim and his wife came. Linda and Robert. Linda's stunning creations were helpful to the cause. We heard this morning that we raised $6800.

I got Linda' s other bejeweled birdhouse, the smaller one, perfect for perching in a tree this winter. Excellent connecting with Mary and Carly! And firming up with Mike and Joy!
