Hi Peaceniks,
Our Read and Practice Peacemaking group is planning a screening of "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" on January 13th at 7:30 at the Methodist Church on Montrose Ave.
It's a documentary about Leymah Gbowee who was one of the recipients of this year's Nobel Peace prize. She helped organize an interfaith group of women whose lives had been traumatized by years of war in Liberia. They stood for peace in the same field wearing t shirts for months until the guys who were posturing in peace talks took them seriously and found ways to come to an agreement. It sounds a little bit like us except their shirts were white. And none of us has threatened to take our clothes off, either.
Gbowee was on the Daily show and is energetic and has a great sense of humor.
You and any interested friends are invited to come join us and get encouraged and reminded that what we do makes a difference.

"Pray the Devil Back to Hell" This sounds like just the ticket, Jeanne. Brian and I have the date marked on our new 2012 calendar...which means, "make it so". Thanks for the invite!

Thanks to Jeanne for the invitation -- and another opportunity to think, feel and talk with the Read and Practice Peacemaking group at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. The documentaries chosen for their Movie Nights are inspired and the discussions afterwards are inspirational. Here's the theatrical trailer for "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" followed by a link to the official website: praythedevilbacktohell.com/

Another film shown in the PBS series along with Pray The Devil Back to Hell showed U.S. Army cultural specialists -- women -- who searched, interviewed and worked with Afghan women, as male soldiers can not. I was devastated to see this recently about one of them www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-cultural-20111212,0,4424366.story

Thanks for the trailer, Brian, and the story, Roberta. It is good to give our attention to these things. It might make a difference.
Looking forward to being inspired together and being back on the corner Friday night.

Attendance next Friday could be huge by the Read and Practice Peacemaking group's standard. Pastor Paige has invited members of other United Methodist congregations in the area to the movie night. I'll go to any lengths to get Paige's beautiful words on this message board -- even copying her recent e-mail: Hello Mission Area colleagues -
Our Read & Practice Peacemaking group, in partnership with the UMW Social Action team, would like to kick off a 2012 year of shared action with a movie night. Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee has been everywhere in the media, including in the UMW's Response magazine. Our peacemaking group read her book, Mighty Be Our Powers, at the same time the Disciple Bible group was deep in Amos and Isaiah. The overlap overwhelmed us with a prophetic urge for peace and justice!
We'll show the movie in our Fellowship Hall or Sanctuary (depending how large the crowd is) with snacks and discussion to follow. Friday, January 13 @ 7:30 pm.
An email from you a couple of days before to let us know of your congregation's interest would be helpful, but isn't strictly necessary. We have also invited our friends with the Montrose Peace Vigil.
Grace and of course Peace to you in this new year,
Paige

Has anyone heard an estimate of attendees? Wednesday night at ceramics class, Jeanne told Anni that seven church members have indicated that they're coming. At the corner last Friday, these Montrose Peace Vigil stalwarts said that they'll be there: Jim, Roberta, Anni, me and, of course, Jeanne and Pastor Paige. That's 13 so far. I bet most of the church members will have eaten dinner beforehand, unlike those of us coming from the vigil. But I plan on ordering more pizza than the vigil stalwarts can eat in case others want some too. We won't need a good estimate until it's time to order the pizzas, around 6:30.
