We'll have a new picture or two from tomorrow's vigil. For now we'll make do with an Imagining Peace moment from February:

Thirteen stalwarts -- including some old friends -- came to the corner this Friday, the best turnout for Montrose Peace Vigil since last December 9. I arrived too late for Edmond and Jenny, stopping on their way to celebrate their anniversary. But I got to talk to Susan, who joined Jeanne and Nancy in our new Imagining Peace sub-vigil. And it was great to see Linda again. Every Friday, the shopping park association takes down the American flag that otherwise flies 24 hours a day over the Vietnam War memorial at Honolulu Avenue and Ocean View Boulevard because we're there, but we've been bringing our own telescoping flagpole since September. It only reaches half mast. Here is this week's compilation of the death announcements by the Department of Defense that we posted: Attachments:

We were blessed with 14 participants at this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, including a few new faces. While shopping at Faye's, a women's clothing store across the street from the vigil, our Roberta met Ellen, who works there. Ellen not only joined us on the corner, she brought her mother Theo, who protested in the huge actions against the Keystone XL pipeline in Washington, D.C. late last year. A young man named Hamlet, who came to Montrose to apply for a job, saw us and stayed for the entire 90 minutes. And Sharon and Bill of Glendale Peace Vigil brought petitions for an initiative -- ourchildrenourfuture2012.com -- to raise $10 billion annually for education that seems less regressive and better targeted than the other two circulating for California's November ballot. Many more people than usual were walking the sidewalks, hanging around the memorial and spooning frozen yogurt in the warm weather, so we had to wait for the right time to bring down our portable flagpole when the vigil ended at 7, which is a nice problem to have. With daylight saving next week, it will be easier to read the Pentagon's announcements of those who died. Here's the PDF that we posted this week: Attachments:

Hi friends, this is my first attempt at attaching a file on the message board. If I succeed, you will see a flyer for a Palm Sunday Peace parade in Pasadena. It's at 3 PM. Those of us who watched Pray the Devil Back To Hell were impressed with the impact that some righteous women in Liberia had in the peacemaking process when they got out on the streets. Roberta and I have been going to this parade for years and I would like to have more of us there this year. Palm Sunday falls on April 1st this year so there is bound to be some humorous street theater along with singing and praying for peace. Do join us. Attachments:

The sky was gray throughout this Friday, the first Montrose Peace Vigil of 2012 under Daylight Saving Time, perhaps suppressing our turnout a little. After standing on the corner for six years, I understand why there would be fewer pedestrians but not why the vehicle traffic also seems lighter when the weather's chilly. Roberta, who arrived at 5:30 with her bag of signs, was alone initially until a gentleman stopped to thank her for protesting every week. She got him to stay for a few minutes until the rest of us started showing up. He did not actually demonstrate, so I cannot include him in the official count: - Mar. 2 - 13
- Mar. 9 - 14
- Mar. 16 - 10
Jeanne, Anni and I resumed the Imagining Peace sub-vigil depicted at the top of this page after missing a week. Mike arrived with his portable flagpole at 6:45 because of a Sig Alert on the 210 freeway out of Pasadena -- thanks to him, we've marked 25 consecutive weeks countering the removal of the shopping park association's flag during our vigils, except for the one with extreme winds. When Roberta rounded the corner at 5:30 this Friday evening to start the vigil, she saw two eighth graders and a younger girl already standing on our patch of grass, waving peace signs at the passing cars. Brie, Melody and Nikki then chose signs from Roberta's bag and stayed until a parent picked them up. For the first time in six years, I couldn't find a parking space on the west side of Ocean View Boulevard, even though I went around the block twice. I'm not complaining. Foot and wheel traffic were heavy. And thanks to the spontaneous demonstrators this month, our official attendance is better than February's: - Mar. 2 - 13
- Mar. 9 - 14
- Mar. 16 - 10
- Mar. 23 - 11
Another two military deaths from Afghanistan this past week, as seen on the Montrose Peace Vigil flagpole: Attachments:
