Take it from Daniel Ellsberg. “I was the Bradley Manning of my day,” he wrote last year. “In 1971 I too faced life (115 years) in prison for exposing classified government lies and crimes. President Obama says ‘the Ellsberg material was classified on a different basis.’ True. The Pentagon Papers were not Secret like the Wikileaks revelations, they were all marked Top Secret—Sensitive.” Private Bradley Manning was arrested in Iraq in May 2010. I ran a search: the Montrose Peace Vigil message board has had 22 posts about him over the past 14 months. We raised $310 for his defense during a vigil last September, and Anni and I marched downtown in December during the International Day of Solidarity calling for his release. Since the trial may not begin until August, we'd better give Bradley his own thread. Ellsberg is a member of the Bradley Manning Support Network's advisory board, as are Michael Moore, Medea Benjamin, Mike Gravel and retired Army Col. Ann Wright. And now Veterans for Peace is demanding that the Army abandon the court martial in its statement released on the Support Network's website: www.bradleymanning.org/featured/veterans-for-peace-demand-bradley-mannings-freedom

The Bradley Manning Support Network has a stellar new 90-second video making his case. And I just found the official video of Graham Nash's tribute to Bradley Manning, "Almost Gone." Today, his supporters will march in gay pride parades in New York City, Chicago and San Francisco. Another motion hearing for his court martial in Fort Meade, Md. is scheduled tomorrow. Keep up here: www.bradleymanning.org/

The Free Bradley Manning So Cal working group plans to occupy the federal courthouse downtown this Friday until Monday, July 13-16, in conjunction with a bunch of area activist organizations (and a few disorganizations as well). The weekend, which begins and ends with marches, will include candlelight vigils, teach-ins, open mic music and poetry along with a planning meeting. Details on the So Cal website: freebradleymanningsocal.com/

Nice to see there are some Bradley Manning supporters around here. Greetings Morgan! I don't know you (or do I?) or how you found us, but yes, you definitely are among Bradley Manning supporters here. You probably read of our peace vigil specifically to spread the word about the case and gather money to support his defense. We dined on sandwiches emulating his humble prison fare. Coincidently, I spent some time recently cleaning my inbox of messages gathering cyber dust. One called for clicking to send a message to President Obama asking him to make good on his campaign promise to support whistle-blowers, which Manning certainly is, but the campaign had expired. So I took pen in hand and wrote a card to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue exhorting the Prez to intervene, in my own words. That Bradley had only honorable intentions, plus his revelations have harmed no one. In fact, didn't they help inspire the democratic uprisings in the Middle East? It really looks as though he may get the book thrown at him when he finally goes to trial, if we can use that good a word for his military proceeding. Here's Daniel Ellsberg's latest, hit my email as I wrote this: www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Save_human_rights_whistleblower_Bradley_Manning/?cZSOqdb

Thanks, Roberta, for posting that link to Daniel Ellsberg's petition calling on President Obama and the military judge to free Bradley Manning. Currently, 15,255 people have signed since August 2 -- 12,000 of those in the first week. A petition last year to end his torture in Quantico got more than 500,000 signatures. The e-mails from the Bradley Manning Support Network keep getting better, and there have been more of them lately. Bradley's torture will not be addressed at the August 27-31 pre-trial hearings after all -- that issue has been postponed, like everything else has for two years since his arrest. Defense counsel David Coombs, who only recently received e-mails from the prosecution that detail the abuse of Bradley under orders of a three-star general, will argue his motion to dismiss the charges from October 1-5. I have to miss the rally at 5 p.m. today in Culver City, but look at this online action set for September 29: 100tpcmedia.org/100TPC2012/2012/08/100-thousand-letters-of-support-for-bradley-manning-pasadena-california/

The previous rally in Culver City on August 16.The Out Against War/L.A. LGBT Greens are organizing another demonstration for Bradley Manning outside President Obama's campaign headquarters in Culver City while he's giving his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention next Thursday, September 6. The Bradley Manning Support Network, which is coordinating actions that day nationwide, just added a webpage for the local event: events.bradleymanning.org/29643/obama_free_bradley_manning

In a pre-trial hearing last week, Pfc. Bradley Manning submitted a plea offer to accept responsibility for lesser included charges -- a process known as pleading by exceptions and substitutions -- as an act of conscience. His attorney explains the strategy in this release by the Bradley Manning Support Network: www.bradleymanning.org/news/releases/accept-responsibilityThe Bradley Manning Support Network is calling for rallies at military recruiting centers from November 27 to December 3, during his next scheduled hearings on the motion to dismiss all charges because of unlawful pretrial punishment. As of now, no local protests have been posted on the official events webpage: www.bradleymanning.org/events
