Almost every night last week. I hear clumsy thumps accompanied by the dragging of claws over my head. Then nothing until the big old dog next door starts bitching.
We had raccoons amble through the yard at our last rented house in Sunland. Here we're beneath some kind of Overhead Railroad -- across the roof, down the trees and through the bamboo.
I was slow to realize where they were headed until I drove down our driveway after last Friday's vigil and my headlights landed on one of the most obese raccoons I ever saw. The woman who lives next to our driveway fills a giant aluminum bowl with dried dog food and leaves it out 24/7, mainly to feed ravens, but I've seen possums and the neighborhood cats eating there.
When I was a kid in Tujunga in the 1960's, raised next to chaparral, we hardly ever saw hawks, possums or raccoons and there were no more bears or cougars in the mountains. I'm so grateful to have them back but I wonder if people are artificially enhancing nature.
Anni's tried to gently reason with her, but our neighbor thinks the wild animals scarfing her Puppy Chow are cute.
It's quiet tonight. Maybe the raccoons would prefer a different brand, like Gravy Train.

"Anni's tried to gently reason with her, but our neighbor thinks the wild animals scarfing her Puppy Chow are cute." What's worse? She also thinks morbidly obese animals (pets and wild) are the proof of her gentle nature and true love. We've seen Ravens too fat to fly, even die. Who is right??? I love animals, too, but I feel it's wrong to partially care for them....especially the wild ones.
