RAPP (Read and Practice Peacemaking) and our United Methodist Women group are joining together to screen "Not My Life," a documentary about Human Trafficking, on Friday, February 7th, at 7:30 PM at Crescenta Valley UMC. The women's group has been learning about the slavery that exists within the United States and would like to do something to increase awareness of the problem. The video is well made and covers a variety of types of slavery and locations.
Since slavery has been outlawed forces of greed have found ways to circumvent laws and to keep slavery hidden in layers of the global economy. There will not be peace on earth as long as there are slaves.
All peaceniks are welcome to join us to watch. we will have some actions you can take and time for discussion afterward. Oh, and refreshments!

Oh, and refreshments! Jeanne, Do you have a flyer for this event I could share with the Commission on the Status of Women? It sounds like something my colleagues would be interested in. If there's no flyer I can just cut and paste your message and share it with them Thanks for increasing awareness of this horrible practice. Sharon

Sharon, we're working with Jeanne to get a downloadable file of the flyer, which we hope to post soon. The official website for "Not My Life" is notmylife.org/. And here's the trailer:

You can't see the entire documentary online, but here are excerpts from five of the people in "Not My Life."Jeanne warned us that the testimony of the victims of human trafficking would be hard to hear. But those folks onscreen last Friday at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church were tougher. They survived to tell their stories -- and the organizations combating poverty and the governments including ours that allow human slavery in the 21st Century are showing us the big picture even as they rescue people, mostly women and children. Guided by Glenn Close's narration, it's a beautifully made film. Many thanks to Jeanne, the heart, mind and voice of the evening, and to Edmond, who screened the movie and helped us to respond immediately with laptop computers afterwards on a wonderful website, which looks like the future of online action to me: chainstorereaction.com/On Friday, March 14, Montrose Peace Vigil is co-sponsoring a screening of Robert Greenwald's famous film, "Unmanned: America's Drone Wars," at the church in conjunction with Read and Practice Peacemaking. We'll soon start another thread for that event here in the Community section of this message board.
