“In 40 years here," Senator Patrick Leahy said, "it was one of the best speeches I’d ever heard and one of the most important.” I was bowled over myself last Tuesday, because the words were coming out of Dianne Feinstein's mouth on the Senate floor and she looked pissed, telling us as clearly as her security clearance would allow that indisputable torture took place systematically last decade, not just so called enhanced interrogation, and the American people need to learn about it. And, by the way, the CIA has run amok, a government unto itself, even under a Democratic President. I followed the Church Committee in the mid-1970's, but the stakes are so much higher now. I've read my share of angry screeds recounting Dianne's many sins over many years enabling the national security state, but her speech got my heart beating like a teenager again. I want to support her new direction -- to "ensure that an un-American, brutal program of detention and interrogation will never again be considered or permitted." For starters, I used the National Religious Campaign Against Torture's customizable letter to her: org.salsalabs.com/o/2162/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=15269
