Last week, the Peace Alliance put out a call for constituents to write to their Senators and Representative, asking them to co-sponsor the International Violence Against Women Act, which would formally enact positions in USAID and the State Department that only exist now through an executive order by President Obama: org.salsalabs.com/o/696/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=15958You will probably want to customize your letter, if only to correct the spelling and grammar errors. There were so many, I made this Word document with my fixes -- you're welcome to copy, paste and make your own changes: C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\Rec....docx (10.97 KB)

We learned more about the second sentence that those released after serving their actual sentences in state prison face when they finally go home at last month's RAPP movie discussion. I read Matt Taibbi's book "The Divide," which further fleshes out the lives of those denied basic opportunities after paying the price for committing nonviolent crimes. Now Senators Cory Booker and Rand Paul are co-sponsoring the Record Expungement Designed to Enhance Employment (REDEEM) Act. And the National Religious Campaign Against Torture has a customizable letter for you to send to your Senators: org.salsalabs.com/o/2162/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=16065

Despite the overwhelming news from Gaza and Ukraine, I haven't forgotten that some 750 U.S. troops were sent to Iraq last month. Neither has Peace Action. In another thread last week, Roberta posted a link to a Just Foreign Policy petition supporting House Concurrent Resolution 105, which would force a debate and vote on the House floor under the War Powers Resolution of 1973. Peace Action has put up this customizable letter asking your Representative to co-sponsor the legislation by Reps. Jim McGovern, Walter Jones and Barbara Lee: org.salsalabs.com/o/161/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=16097

Then there's Iran. Credo has a petition to our elected officials on Capitol Hill, asking them to let the diplomats do their job:

This may be an idea whose time has finally come: stop sales of U.S. weapons to foreign countries. The sight of ISIS soldiers riding around in U.S.-made tanks last month and helping themselves to the stockpiles of weapons that we gave to the Iraqi government should be enough to change our policies, since we didn't learn our lessons after arming Iraq and tribes in Afghanistan in the 1980's. Roots Action has a customizable letter for your Representative, both Senators and President Obama: act.rootsaction.org/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=10169
