Thanks to Jeanne and Edmond for organizing the sixth RAPP movie night this year! Here's the official trailer for "The Revisionaries," winner of the 2014 duPont Award, which is administered by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism: And this is the documentary's website with a different trailer on the homepage: www.therevisionariesmovie.com/

From the trailer I'm thinking I'll need some Chamomile tea and a Pepcid, so I can remain somewhat calm for the duration (of this movie).

A more detailed invitation from Jeanne:
Greetings Friends,
RAPP (Read And Practice Peacemaking) is back after a restful summer with another film for you. As students and teachers return to school and local and state elections for education officials, our thoughts turn to instructional standards and First Amendment issues. We have just the film for you! It will be shown on Friday, September 12, 7:30 PM at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave, Montrose. Doors will open at 7.
"The Revisionaries" documents the debates and the politics surrounding the Texas Board of Education as they wrestle with some members' desire to include Creationism in the science curriculum. What does that have to do with us? Texas is one of the largest markets for textbooks and publishers want to cater their content to please their biggest customers. The books that Texas purchases will also be used in other states. Tennessee and Louisiana legislators have been encouraged by the traction that Creationism gained in Texas and are making similar efforts there. There are some passionate people who are shaping our culture through educational policy and it's important to be aware.
The filmmaker Scott Thurman explains the significance that the decision making process has on our children's education, our culture and our responsibilities as citizens:
“People need to understand how important these lower bodies of government are. A lot of people don’t take the time to vote on these elections, but they need to. They’re important. I would just like to see the board less politicized and [consist of] people with experience in education that have knowledge in a particular area and can listen to the experts rather than stand up to the experts. I think that’s a path to a better education for our kids.”
Many of you are interested in education, science, and the relationship between faith and science. Please join us on the 12th to watch the film and then partake of refreshments and lively discussion afterwards.

A frame from the documentary that won the Special Jury Award at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. In case you didn't get it, Jeanne sent out this e-mail last night for the screening of "The Revisionairies" this Friday, September 12:

The cartoon I posted above with the arks isn't as satirical as I thought: as the movie discusses, Revisionaries believe dinosaurs coexisted with humans and were even transported on Noah's Ark.
I'd always heard that dinosaur fossils were a deception by Satan to test our faith.
Personally, I don't care what people believe--so long as they don't try to impose it on everyone else.
