Here's a letter from Jeanne, further explaining what Empty Bowls is all about:
Greetings Friends and Neighbors,
It's finally Fall and that means it's time for another Empty Bowls at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church located at 2700 Montrose Ave., in Montrose. It will be from 4:30-8 PM on Saturday, October 11.
Empty Bowls has become a popular event in the community and over the last six years has raised over $35,000 for hunger relief. Preparations began early in the summer when potters and friends and members of CVUMC began making and glazing hundreds of beautiful ceramic bowls at Creative Arts Group in Sierra Madre. Mike Flower, Ceramics teacher at CV High, has been guiding his students to make bowls for us again this year. Several local restaurants have agreed to donate gallons of soup to fill those bowls. Your $15 donation will allow you to choose the bowl that is right for you and to fill it with the soup of your choice. The proceeds will go to support organizations that are working to relieve hunger. We also want to support just and green farming efforts and so we'll have some Fair Trade, Organic Coffee, Chocolate, and Palestinian Olive Oil available for purchase. And to top it off, live music led by CVUMC's Director of Music, Barb Catlin, will fill the hall. This is a fine way to be with your neighbors.
When you leave, you bring your Empty Bowl home with you to remind you of the hunger that many of our neighbors face daily.
But if your cupboard is too full of bowls from past years, feel free to bring some back and we'll find a good home for them.
The poster is attached below. Please share it as you feel moved. All are welcome.
See you on the 11th.
God's Love,
Jeanne L.

Hi Friends,
I've talked with most of you about Empty Bowls which is next Saturday. And Brian and anni have been great about broadcasting it here. I'd like to add another bit of info. Barb Catlin, our music director will be providing music for the evening and it promises to be great. She's a jazz pianist and band leader and has lots of contacts in the jazz world and among her students. A few of them will be joining her. At 7 she's going to have choir and friends sing some familiar songs - One Love, Blowin' in the Wind, If I Had a Hammer, and This Land is Your Land. She would love to have some peaceniks join us on stage to sing along. The more the merrier. She's preparing a notebook for anni and Roberta. Anyone else? Don't be shy. Let me know or come on up at 7 on Saturday.

Thanks to everyone who came to Empty Bowls. I hope you al know that anni helped to make a lot of those bowls, the beautiful ones.
We brought in a little over $5000 Saturday night and more is trickling in.
Happy October 15th to Brian and anni. May a sane and balanced schedule return until the next deadline.
I hope some of you peaceniks will be able to join us this Friday night for another RAPP film. "Stories From An Undeclared War" is a documentary version of "The Freedom Writers." It hasn't been released yet and the editor will be there. We'll also have representatives from Learning Works, a more local and current example of heroic public education. It's a charter school in Pasadena that actively pursues and persists with students that conventional schools have given up on. They have a good graduation rate. CVUMC lends support to the teen mothers at the school, providing gifts and scholarships for parenting classes.
These ingredients add up to possibilities for peacemaking.
Hope to see you there at 7:30 this Friday.
