Greetings Friends and Neighbors,
We had a very engaged audience for our September film on the culture battles surrounding curriculum choices shown in "The Revisionaries." An authentic and respectful discussion afterwards, where many points of view were aired. These interactions are building blocks of peace and they are the reason that Read And Practice Peacemaking continues to offer a forum for information and opportunities to respond and connect. The topic of education struck a chord, perhaps because it is universal (we've all been to school) and it shapes and determines the direction our society takes.
Good news! We have another film about education for Friday, October 17, at Crescenta Valley UMC, 2700 Montrose Avenue, Montrose.
"Stories From An Undeclared War" is a documentary about the Freedom Writers, who were at risk students form Long Beach. With encouragement, inspiring curriculum, and high expectations, these "unteachable" students beat the odds. You may be familiar with the Hollywood version of this story that starred Hilary Swank. "Stories From An Undeclared War" is the not yet released documentary that shows the actual events and process. We are fortunate to be able to screen this film before it's release.
We have a similar educational success story unfolding right here in our own area. Learning Works Charter School in Pasadena offers a fresh start for underserved, at risk students and sees them through graduation. CVUMC is honored to be in relationship with Learning Works, providing support to the Pregnant and Parenting Teens Program.
Dr. Mikala Rahn, Founder of Learning Works will be present on the 17th along with some students and alumnae. They will be available after the film for questions and discussion.
I guarantee that this film and the conversation afterwards will leave you inspired and hopeful about the potential that public education holds for molding a more inclusive, just and thriving society.
You are welcome to be a part of this. Doors open at 7. Film begins at 7:30.
Peace and Hope,
Jeanne Lavieri
