That customizable letter on Code Pink's website, which Roberta linked above, was virtually the same as other form letters that I've read recently calling for a Congressional vote on our newest war. Peace groups are coordinating their activities this week -- and the message. They start by asking your Senators and Representative to oppose military action in Iraq and Syria. Since that's politically, absolutely impossible in any Congress, the letters go on to list the restrictions that must be included in a war powers act, such as a sunset provision requiring reauthorization, the sooner the better. Rep. Adam Schiff's resolution says 18 months. Tom Hayden proposes a one year limit in this petition posted on Monday, which his Democracy Project will present to all of Congress, making the petition a nice complement to the customizable letters: www.gopetition.com/petitions/petition-congress-to-end-the-escalation-in-iraq-syria.htmlAfter I signed on Tuesday, I saw that mine was only the 552nd signature. Hope there are a lot more by now. What I appreciate about the host, GoPetition, is that they do not contact you again after sending an immediate confirmation, and they do not give e-mail addresses to other organizations.

I'm sure you heard about Secretary Chuck Hagel's announcement last Friday that the Defense Department needs billions of dollars now so airmen do not have to send the one wrench that tightens nuclear warheads to each other at different Air Force installations via Fed Ex. They couldn't buy a few wrenches somewhere in the existing budget? Of course, the Secretary was wielding a different tool: a wedge for a trillion dollar proposal to revamp the U.S. nuclear war arsenal over the next decade. That was clear in the rerun of the Pentagon news conference that I watched on C-SPAN. Perhaps you read the lead story in the Los Angeles Times on Saturday, which was good enough to quote the head of Global Zero. That organization immediately posted a customizable letter to President Obama. I changed the last paragraph to both tighten it and to soften my message to the President. I made the letter more positive -- he has the time left in his term to do what's right. www.globalzero.org/demand-zero/abandon-the-trillion-dollar-budget
