Senator Elizabeth Warren launched a petition on her campaign's previously moribund website, elizabethwarren.com/, to stop a provision in the spending bill passed by the House Rules Committee on Wednesday. The insert, written by Citigroup lobbyists according to the New York Times, would repeal the Dodd-Frank prohibition against federal bailouts of banks when their speculations go bad, as in 2008. She insists that the provision be stripped from the bill and if it's not, that Democrats vote no on the bill. You'd think that tea partiers would sign this too: my.elizabethwarren.com/page/s/noderivativesdeal?source=blogI want to start a thread about the release, finally, of the torture report summary, but even two days later, I'm still too angry to write about it. I remember how I felt in 2006 when the torture was exposed, but as with every atrocity committed in our names, the truth is even worse than we imagined way back when. Geez, what else could we glean from the entire 6700 page report? On television, nobody explains big stories better than Rachel Maddow. This bootleg You Tube video covers half of Rachel's segment opening her show on MSNBC Tuesday night:

Thanks for this link, Brian. It is as disturbing as we thought. I heard Michael Hayden interviewed on NPR Tuesday night. He admitted that the CIA had made some mistakes but that "making a few terrorists uncomfortable" wasn't the end of the world. Sorry I don't have more accurate reporting skills, hard to take notes when I'm driving. The woman interviewing him didn't let him get away with the use of "uncomfortable." It's very disturbing to see the foul muck getting piled higher and deeper as they defend something indefensible. And interesting to see that the CIA's power overpowers partisan politics, as the Democratic president is afraid to speak out against the CIA.

This is the first link to an online action related to the torture report that Brian has seen -- it's a petition by Roots Action to President Obama to appoint a special prosecutor:
act.rootsaction.org/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=10728
Remember to uncheck the boxes for Witness Against Torture and the Bill of Rights Defense Committee before you submit if you do not want to receive e-mails from those petition co-sponsors.
I was number 14,384.

With Norm, Pearl, Jeanne, and myself we have more than enough hands to display the rose-themed "Remember Afghanistan" posters on New Year's Eve afternoon at Colorado near Raymond. (I forget which exact corner that has a little extra sidewalk space we've used in previous years, but around there.) More peaceniks are always welcome though, and there is room in the Prius -- parking is the biggest challenge of course.
In addition to updating the U.S. troops killed, I will add Afghan civilian deaths, which Wikipedia reports as an estimated 18,000 to 20,000. Many people are supportive of the reminder, none more so than the convoy of veterans that usually cruises Colorado at some point.
The partying there heats up quickly in the afternoon, plus John and I are hosting boomers attempting to stay awake til midnight that evening. Our usual slot of approx. 1:00 til 3:00 p.m. would work for me. Others?

I'll be happy to ride in the Prius and to be seen with such lovely posters and people and to return home in time for a nap so I can party till midnight.
