Anni snapped this photo before anyone arrived at the Empty Bowls fundraiser in 2012. Nobody can kick off the eighth annual Empty Bowls thread on the Montrose Peace Vigil message board better than Jeanne. Here's an excerpt from her recent e-mail:Soup Season is fast approaching and with it comes our 8th Empty Bowls event. Many of you are already aware of the event because you helped us transform mud into marvelous bowls during our summer workshops. Thank you, volunteers, for that crucial contribution. Those beautiful bowls which reflect our team’s developing skills and creativity will be awaiting everyone on Saturday, November 7th, between 4:30 and 8 PM at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Avenue in Montrose, CA 91020. This year promises the same wonderful features that you have been enjoying - a variety of delicious soups donated by local restaurants, live music led by CVUMC’s gifted Music Director Barb Catlin, and Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, tea, and olive oil available for purchase. You will select a handmade bowl on the way in, fill it with a serving of the soup of your choice, and enjoy it in the good company of friends and neighbors. Then you return home with your empty bowl to remind you of those in the world who are hungry. We will be passing on the proceeds from the event to The Bailey Human Care Center of Tujunga UMC, Friends In Deed of Pasadena and the World Service Fund. Representatives from Bailey and Friends In Deed will be present to tell you how important your contribution is to their work of providing support to those in our community who are in need. The World Service Fund supports the greater United Methodist Church in its mission to end poverty globally and locally.

Here's more from Jeanne's e-mail:You can’t help but notice our Souper Hero theme on the atteched poster. It’s fun to aspire to the dramatic feats of our favorite super heroes. It is more likely that we will accomplish changes for a better world by an ongoing series of smaller, attainable achievements. This is certainly evident when we witness the decades of dedicated service of volunteers at the Bailey Center and Friends In Deed. Many lives have been made better because of the compassionate care they have offered. You can be a part of this steady story by coming to Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church at 2700 Montrose Avenue on November 7th. Feel free to wear the super hero t shirt of your choice because your presence will be an important piece of the plot to overcome hunger.
Blessings, Jeanne

Montrose Peace Vigil cofounder Nancy at last year's Empty Bowls at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. What's not to love every year at Empty Bowls -- enjoying soup made by local chefs, meeting old and new friends, hearing great live music? Or is it just the spirit inhabiting the event and the handmade ceramic bowls themselves? I love the causes too. One constant beneficiary of every Empty Bowls fundraiser is Friends In Deed, which began in 1894 in Pasadena. This is their website today: www.friendsindeedpas.org/

Jeanne as seen before the doors opened at the 2012 Empty Bowls event. Jeanne gives us more details about the eighth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on November 7 in this e-mail she sent out Saturday:It’s looking like we might enjoy some soup weather (below 80) next Saturday. I hope that you have carved out a few hours on your calendar to attend Empty Bowls. We’ll be serving delicious soup from 4:30-8 PM in Fellowship Hall at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, located at 2700 Montrose Avenue in Montrose. We will have lots of bright and beautiful bowls for you to choose. They have been made with a desire to help ease hunger. The soup line up is powerfully delicious again this year with donations from Frank’s, New Moon, Dish, Hill Street, Joselito’s, Zeke’s, Los Gringos, and City Hall. And Berolina Bakery will be providing plenty of their hearty breads. Also available for purchase will be fair trade, organic chocolate, coffee, tea, and olive oil from Palestine. We offer these products to you at our cost so that more may enjoy the harvest from a supply chain that honors the labor of farmers and the earth. All of this will be enhanced with the sounds of CVUMC’s talented musicians. Barb Catlin, a talented jazz pianist, will be playing and leading our choir in some favorites. Ricky Cosentino, Tim Kobza and Alexis Sklarevski, LA based musicians, will also be sharing their gifts with us. The music alone will be worth the suggested donation which is $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. After enjoying the soup and the time with neighbors and friends, you will be able to bring your empty bowls home to remind you of hunger. Your donation will help ease hunger in our area. If you have been faithfully attending Empty Bowls for the past seven years and find your cupboards full, you are welcome to bring some of those bowls to us and we will use them again. If you have any super hero t shirts or costumes and would enjoy wearing them, go for it. That will add to the fun, festive atmosphere of the evening.

Just when you thought dinner could not possibly get any better (with soup so delish and friends all around) the group singing starts. We weren't supposed to sing at the dinner table, as kids...now is different and a spoonful of song is perfect!Love and joy were everywhere...from serving up the soup to behind the scenes...in the kitchen.

It was fun singing along. I liked the way the music was done at the beginning of Aquarius (there may have been humming by the choir, too?). I've heard that part done different ways. This had a spiritual quality. Talented choir!
