Buffin, as his bandmates and we Mott the Hoople fans called him, was too frail to play much at the band's 40th anniversary concerts in 2009. Yet he was responsible for reuniting all of the original members for the first time in 36 years. That's Buffin behind the second drum kit, on the right, in that You Tube clip from the encore. I've been watching that video for years, because when the camera finally pans to him around 2:10, you catch him breaking into a smile. At the end, Ian turns to Buffin for the cue that brings "All the Young Dudes" to its close. Buffin was the backbone of the greatest rock and roll band that I ever saw, and its soul.
Ian Hunter posted this tribute on his website: “The last time I saw Buff was at the First MTH reunion in 2009. He was eloquent and aware and had a great time doing the encores. I’m so glad he was able to do that – Mott was his band. He not only played to the song – he played to the lyric. Our condolences to his partner Jean Smith. R.I.P. Terence Dale Griffin.”
