Ross, Norm, Pearl, Kathy and Anni at the Eagle Rock vigil on April 30, 2016.
The North East Los Angeles Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice started protesting U.S. military action in Iraq four months before we invaded in March 2003, and many of them still occupy the southwest corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards almost every Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. Iraq is back and American troops never left Afghanistan, but the stalwarts of Eagle Rock are also addressing issues like climate change and racism while campaigning for Bernie Sanders these days. I've attended for two years, enjoying the company of my fellow demonstrators and the goodwill of passersby under the shade of the big gas station sign. Consider stopping by sometime -- or at least honk if you're driving by.
Here's a fabulous article on the fifth anniversary of the Eagle Rock vigil that was posted on the Los Angeles Indymedia website in 2007, followed by photos from past events:

The Eagle Rock Music Festival starts next Saturday, August 20, at 4 p.m. -- same time that the weekly Eagle Rock vigil begins its two hours. The city closes six blocks of Colorado Boulevard east of Eagle Rock Boulevard for the annual event, whose entrance is directly across the intersection from the vigil. Here's the link to the festival's website:
With the closure, there will be no reason to hold up signs for people in vehicles, as we usually do. Instead, vigil regulars will be mobilized to greet the pedestrians being dropped off at the southwest corner after taking a free shuttle from the Eagle Rock Plaza parking lot.

Thank you, Oss Rae, for scanning and posting that photo from the September 7, 2016 edition of the Glendale News-Press. The semi-weekly community newspaper, which is owned by the Los Angeles Times, recently expanded its distribution to Eagle Rock -- I see free copies at the Starbucks near the corner now. Anyway, that photo was taken September 3, before Anni and I arrived. Roberta knows the photographer, Raul Roa, who happened to be driving by the vigil that Saturday while covering another assignment.
In other news, I've heard that Norm, Ross and Nina are planning another 24-hour vigil on the southwest corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards. In past years, lots of peaceniks and other activists have dropped by, and some have stayed to occupy the corner throughout the night. Watch this thread for updates.

The 24-hour vigil has been set for Oct. 22 through 23. Unfortunately, when we decided on the date in August, we didn't know Empty Bowls would also be on 10-22. We'll probably go there in shifts while others keep the vigil going. Next year we'll probably resume having it in the summer. Here's an article, with pix Nina did on our first 24-hour vigil in 2013. la.indymedia.org/news/2013/10/261986.phpAnd here's our Facebook event page: la.indymedia.org/news/2013/10/261986.php

That was the scene at last year's 24-hour vigil in Eagle Rock, sponsored by our old friends and fellow activists of the North East Los Angeles Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice, just as it was getting underway.
Come and check out the next 24-hour vigil anytime between 2 p.m. Saturday, October 22, and 2 p.m. Sunday, at the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Eagle Rock Boulevard, on the southwest corner.

In past years some have sponsored me by contributing to a cause for me participating 24 hours--though this year I will take about a 60-90 minute hiatus to attend Empty Bowls while others maintain our 24-hour presence at the vigil site. Even though I'll be leaving the site for a bit, it'll be to do more activism. Being sponsored helps me to keep going the 24 hours. These are some of my favorite causes, but as always, I'm open to others: *Honor the Earth (founded and run by Winona LaDuke, et al) awards grants to Native American projects in North America, including community farms, alternative energy, cultural preservation, endeavors to stop pipelines... www.honorearth.org/*Haiti Emergency Relief Fund (HERF). Particularly timely now in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. It's very difficult, especially in Haiti, to find aid organizations that are reliable and actually help. HERF is an all-volunteer organization; recipients of donated funds decide how the money should be spent. I've helped raise money for them in the past (including this event: la.indymedia.org/news/2011/09/247858.php) and last week made a donation of my own. haitiemergencyrelief.org/Haiti_Emergency_Relief_Fund/home.html*No More Victims: Provides hospitalization/medical care for child victims of war in Iraq. www.nomorevictims.org/*Friendship Village: A collaboration between U.S. and Vietnamese veterans to treat and rehabilitate victims of Agent Orange, including veterans and children with birth defects. www.vietnamfriendship.org/wordpress/

Once a year, I get to write about an event while it's still happening. So if you're reading this before 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, you can join the annual 24-hour Peace through Justice protest on the corner of Eagle Rock and Colorado Boulevards in Eagle Rock. Here is the schedule for the remaining 14 hours: - Sign making and watching films on laptops in the wee hours
- Yoga with Roberta after dawn
- Discussions on the California ballot measures
- And sign holding for the passing traffic and outreach to passersby throughout the night, morning and early afternoon Sunday.
Anni and I were there near the beginning, between 4 and 6 p.m. Saturday -- Anni posted photos in a new thread: montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/thread/604/hour-eagle-rock-vigil-photos
