Just a heads up that the Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival is doing FREE performances of Richard III now through July 24. The performances are outdoor and a wonderful opportunity for a picnic dinner with a group of friends or family. Richard III is a warning about the unadulterated greed for personal power of a true Machiavellian leader who lacks all moral and emotional compunction. How could that be relevant in 2016? www.iscla.org/griffith-park-festival/

I don't know if I'll make this, but I like seeing Shakespeare performed over reading him since the plays were intended to be watched. (I think reading them has value, too, especially for studying the English language.)
Back in the late '80s I used to go to a reconstruction of the Globe Theater on the west side (just off of Santa Monica Blvd. as I recall), but I haven't heard anything about it in decades. Maybe it's gone now. The general look and design of the original Globe was reconstructed but scaled down.

Tonight on KPFK I learned about a staging of Romeo and Juliet set in modern East Jerusalem (I gather the dialog is mostly the same, but some characters have been renamed to reflect the different setting). Tonight's discussion about it can be accessed in KPFK's Audio Archives for 90 days (as I write this it's near the top of the listing but will be pushed further down as time transpires). archive.kpfk.org/ It's inaccurately called "Music with rotating hosts" in the slot starting at 8pm. The part pertaining to the play starts a little after 26 minutes into it. The play itself is being put on over the summer at Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga. theatricum.com/romeo-and-juliet/
