I believe I brought this up a year or two ago, but now the stakes have gone up. An elaborate plan (critics say an overly-elaborate plan) to remove sediment at Devil's Gate Dam has grown even larger in scope and, among other things, would drive away an endangered bird, Least Bell's Vireo (federally recognized as endangered). As it is, the plan would defoliate much of the flora and require an enormous number of trucks to come through the area on a daily basis. A simpler but more long-term plan was put forward by environmentalists but not embraced by the city/county. People are being asked to write letters and speak out at meetings. This video goes into more detail: as does this pdf document, which mentions upcoming meetings: www.arroyoseco.org/documents/NoBigDigUpdate1607.pdfThis is an article I wrote about Hahamongna and the competing plans a few years ago (and is probably already mentioned elsewhere on this board). la.indymedia.org/news/2014/04/263707.phpWhat would Abbie Hoffman do?

What a great post. Thank you so much, Oss Rae.
This bizarre secretive project smells like Mike Antonovich to me. I want to find out what Democratic supervisorial candidate Darrell Park thinks before I vote for him again in November.
And I especially enjoyed revisiting your Indymedia article, photos and video about Hahamongna!

I know Antonovich was involved in the initial plan to defoliate much of Hahamongna and send huge amounts of trucks in. Even though I haven't heard his name attached to this even bigger version, I imagine he's in on it. I used to like him. For decades he had been a strong proponent for implementing monorails in the greater L.A. area. I've subsequently learned that monorails are quite a bit cheaper, safer, and more reliable than light rails--and certainly subways--and have even been profitable. This is pretty short notice--I just learned about it--but tomorrow (Saturday July 16), there's going to be another Walkabout at Hahamongna/Oak Grove Park. It's the same type of event that I covered in my write-up that I linked to above. www.facebook.com/events/1232748780098100/

Brian, LA Co Flood control isn't being secretive about this project. They have been holding public meetings - there's one this afternoon, dpw.lacounty.gov/lacfcd/sediment/prj.aspx?prj=1They do seem to be going forward despite much objection from the environmental community. I think there would be more public outcry if there weren't so many other issues worrying people now. CVCA is also interested in what Supervisor candidate Darrell Park has to say. We're working on a candidate forum for Thursday evening, Sept. 29th and he has accepted our invitation. I'm awaiting confirmation from he other candidate, Antonovich deputy Kathryn Barger.
