The 16-CD box set, "Kris Kristofferson: The Complete Monument & Columbia Albums Collection."
Sony's Legacy Recordings released that box set in June to honor Kris Kristofferson's 80th birthday -- his first 11 studio albums, from 1970 to 1981, plus three early concert recordings, two of which had never been released before, along with two discs of studio and demo rarities. I wanted it immediately, so I drove to Amoeba Records in Hollywood. No box was on display. I asked the nice and helpful employees to look it up on their computer. They told me that it's just a German release (it is not), so Amoeba wouldn't be stocking it. Then I tried Streetlight Records during a vacation to Santa Cruz, with its impressive displays of box sets by artists like Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones. But the manager said that they didn't consider Kristofferson popular enough to buy. I had to order it from Amazon:

I see that Amazon has lowered the price $20 from what I paid -- to $87, which comes to an amazing $5.43 per disc. I only had cassettes of his albums previously, but now I also have high quality digital copies of Kris' songs from the "Songwriter" soundtrack without paying $75 for the long out-of-print CD. That Alan Rudolph movie made me a big fan of his in 1984, especially because of "Crossing the Border," a brave anthem that hits harder today:

Kris Kristofferson was nominated for Best Original Song Score for "Songwriter" at the Academy Awards that year, although Prince won for "Purple Rain." Here's the segment from the movie using the original version of "Under the Gun."
To see a complete live performance of that song from 1989, click on this link for a broadcast quality video that Oss Rae posted in the July vigils thread:
