Last night KPFA* played what was presented as a non-professional recording of the Grateful Dead circa January 14, 1967. This Saturday is the 40th anniversary of the event, the first Human Be-In. The recordings were interspersed with conversations with people who were there.
Here's where you can hear it in KPFA's archives: kpfa.org/episode/dead-to-the-world-january-11-2017/
There seemed to be agreement among guests that the alternative living in Haight-Ashbury had been under the radar until this Be-In. But because of all the publicity surrounding the Be-In, Haight-Ashbury became flooded with people around the country. There were good aspects of this, but apparently it led to Haight-Ashbury's decline (e.g., increased heavy drugs came in, and women were victimized). On the upside, many values of Haight-Ashbury (e.g., what's in the food they're selling us?) got exposure around the world.
This show was intended to promote an event this Sat. night marking the Be-In's 50th anniversary. In addition to the many live guests, some people, including Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, will appear via streaming video.
I considered making an emergency trip up to S.F. to attend this, but it's already sold out (and may have been sold out before last night's radio segment aired). Admission was only $20--nothing for an event in San Francisco these days--with proceeds going to the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic ("founded in 1967 and still serving the local community and its visitors in 2017")!
At least Saturday's event will be live streamed here: peacechannel.com/
Even though the event is sold out, I recommend looking at the Facebook event page: www.openculture.com/2014/09/rare-footage-of-human-be-in.html. There are pix of the original flyer and covers of the Oracle. (If you're not on Facebook, you can still see the flyer here: www.openculture.com/2014/09/rare-footage-of-human-be-in.html)
