We saw "Hidden Figures" yesterday and it is a really great film portraying the fact based story of brilliant African American women when race relations were not so great in America. We saw "La La Land" which was good silly fun but nowhere near as good a film. "Lion" is the only other Best Picture nominee we've seen. It's also based on a true story and very well done. We recommend all three.

Last Wednesday Marian W. and I saw "Moonlight." We loved this movie. It so elegantly shares a life you might have thought you'd never know. Yet at every turn you recognize places, incidents, flashes. I find I'm still enjoying this journey, deep in my soul. A strong movie, indeed.

We've seen "La La Land," "Lion," and "Hidden Figures." All are worth watching, "La La Land" for its locations all around town. We especially liked those shot on the WB lot where we both worked for a while, although not at the same time. It's just fluff but fun. The other two are thought provoking and very well done. We hope to see a few others while they're still in theaters.

We saw "Moonlight" yesterday afternoon and thought the performances were excellent. It's a heartbreaking story with many layers. Then in the evening we watched "13th" at home on Netflix that is really a companion piece. It's a wonderful documentary on how the clause in the 13th Amendment that exempts those convicted of a crime from the prohibition of involuntary servitude coupled with the War on Drugs has lead to mass incarceration. More African Americans are in jails and prisons now than were slaves pre Civil War. The for profit prison industry is the new Jim Crow system.

We had to go out to Monrovia to see "Fences" but it was worth the trip. Another excellent film with stellar performances.
