Is anyone else familiar with Hairspray? It began as a John Waters movie in 1988 with Rikki Lake and Divine, then became a stage musical, which in turn was made into another movie in 2007.
I saw the original movie but passed on the second movie based on the musical because of my distaste for remakes (and I had reservations about John Travolta taking over the role Divine had played). However, last night I stumbled onto this version on cable and wasgreatly impressed.
It really plays up on the racial tension and oppression that existed in the early '60s while still being highly entertaining. And this is probably my favorite role by John Travolta.

Although ten years have gone by, somehow I haven't seen that version of "Hairspray." After reading your post and watching the trailer, I want to now.
My favorite John Travolta role is his Bill Clinton impersonation in Mike Nichol's "Primary Colors," based on the genius novel by Joe Klein after the 1992 election.

I remember the name Primary Colors, but in looking at the preview I realize I missed it. I'll have to look for it.
By the way, another movie that really impressed me was Oliver Stone's Snowden, which I finally caught a few weeks ago. Did anyone else see it? It really drove home to me the magnitude of domestic spying.
