Pervnado! That was the headline on the front page of the New York Post last week.
Let's start with one of the pervs who blows the most, my state assemblyman. Last month, the Los Angeles Times revealed that Raul Bocanegra was disciplined by the Assembly Rules Committee three years before he was elected, when he was chief of staff to Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes. Despite that, he continued his ways -- six more women went on the record in Tuesday's Times relating uninvited physical contact and other extremely loutish behavior by him since 2012.
I've questioned Bocanegra's character and judgment in past threads on the Montrose Peace Vigil message board. He lost his bid for re-election in 2014 to Patty Lopez by 467 votes after getting two thirds of the vote in the primary. Just two years in office, he was spending his campaign money and time in the Antelope Valley on election day helping another assemblyman because Bocanegra was already running for speaker. Then his people started a Stop Patty Lopez website and Facebook page, and they mounted a focus group to explore a recall campaign -- just as Lopez was being sworn in. He got the seat back last November with an avalanche of money, mailers and cable TV ads.
Lots of the perps in the news were fired immediately from the powerful and lucrative jobs they used to assault women, but so far Bocanegra has only offered to resign after the legislative session ends next September. He should resign now. As his constituent, I will not wait for the Assembly to return to Sacramento in January and start the slow process of removing him, as they must. I don't care that Democrats may lose their supermajority if this seat is temporarily vacant. And the expense and inconvenience of a special election should be no consideration either.
I should not have to pay Bocanegra's salary anymore.
