Roberta clued me into the publication of a letter to the editor by our Louisa in Wednesday's Los Angeles Times, responding to a great column about the storied San Francisco Chronicle that ran last Sunday. Here's her letter:
Rather than bailing out the banks, let's consider bailing out the newspapers. When publications like the Rocky Mountain News, the San Francisco Chronicle and other dailies are on the verge of extinction, who will then serve as the guardians of justice and accountability? Who will keep a watchful eye on the democratic process?
Declining newspaper coverage is a heavy blow to 1st Amendment advocates.
Louisa B. Caucia Montrose
The Times ran a note on Monday's Opinion page that they had received only "549 printable letters" the previous week. So this might be the best time ever to get a letter published -- if things don't get worse, that is.

My Dad clipped a short article from the Desert Sun in Palm Springs and mailed it to me a couple of weeks ago. I meant to post a link here -- now it's buried in the newspaper's archives. So I'll have to rewrite it.
Mario Sewell, a 71-year-old activist who assembles care packages for troops in Iraq, called off the monthly peace vigils he's held at La Quinta's busiest intersection since the fifth anniversary of the invasion only a few days before the sixth.
"It seemed time to move on for everyone," said Sewell. "I'm going to see how the war plays out in the next year and a half, and whether it blows up again if the president doesn't follow through with his word. We may decide to start meeting again."
Stacy Wiedmaier reported that Sewell's vigil attracted dozens every week: people from "Veterans for Peace, members of the Coachella-based Comite Latino organization and parents whose adult children are serving overseas." This is my favorite part:
And the response from passers-by was mixed -- some gave them the peace sign while others yelled profanities
He also wrote that a Palm Springs Peace Vigil will continue to meet at 7 p.m. on the 19th of each month at Tahquitz Canyon Way and Palm Canyon Drive.
Last summer, when Anni and I were down there visiting my parents, then-President Bush was in town. We saw the local peaceniks gathering at a Palm Desert supermarket parking lot to go protest where Bush was staying. They have a community, but it's hard to gain any momentum when you only meet once a month.

It was good of them to have the discussion about peace in the paper. There were some things that I felt a need to respond to. With encouragement from Roberta and guidance from Paige, I have written a comment. I thought I was writing a letter to the editor, but maybe just something for their online readers? Journalism savvy friends, please advise.

I thought I was writing a letter to the editor, but maybe just something for their online readers? Journalism savvy friends, please advise. Roberta's truly accomplished at being published by the News Press -- perhaps she has the best suggestions next time she visits. I think a letter to the editor or, if longer, a proposed guest editorial is the way to go. Four days later, I don't think many will read that page or your lone comment on the Web after you go through all the steps to register. And I believe a staffer reviews the comments before they're posted.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of traffic on the News-Press website yet -- perhaps all the fogeys like me who like newsprint have gathered to make a last stand here in Glendale and the Crescenta Valley!
Having gone to the trouble of writing, my inclination is to go for the most readers, in the paper edition. In my experience and from what activists friends have reported, they publish most letters submitted, esp. something as thoughtful and well-mannered as yours, Jeanne and Paige.

p.s. I wouldn't worry about the length -- just write what you want to express. I sent in a whopper once (or twice?) and they published it as a "guest commentary" or somesuch.

Thanks, Brian and Roberta. I emailed the GNP this morning and explained my error and asked them if they could redirect it to print. We'll see.
