Bill, Louisa and I were wondering on the corner last night what's the status of former Senator Norm Coleman's legal challenges to Al Franken's recount victory in Minnesota. I just found this Associated Press story dated today: news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090131/ap_on_re_us/minnesota_senate_bush_v_goreNot only is the Bush v. Gore argument back, so are some of my favorite villains, like attorney Ben Ginsberg. Read to the bottom and you'll see that the three-judge panel may rule any day now on the various arguments, which at their root strike me as typically Republican and cynical -- that government does not work, so democracy can't.

It's weird watching Joe Biden on television now -- swearing in Cabinet secretaries, standing by the podium as the President speaks or just waving to bystanders. You know, acting like a Vice President.
Only a year ago, when he wasn't running for President, he was chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He could talk to heads of state on his cellphone while riding the Amtrak home to Delaware. Now he chairs task forces.
Too bad Biden doesn't enjoy the diversions of his predecessor, like instituting torture, destroying e-mails and entertaining the likes of Ken Lay in the West Wing. What ever happened to the custom safe Dick had in his office, the one big enough to contain a man?
Maybe I shouldn't worry, but did Biden make a stifling career choice? Say it ain't so, Joe.

Maybe I'm just looking from 'idealized eyes', but it seems like he brings a lot of dignity and partnership to the office. It looks like he likes his new gig just fine!!!

Our friend Debra was quoted on the front page of the Sunday Business section, starting at the jump, in an excellent overview of the foreclosure process that kicks off a Times series, Surviving Recession: A Consumer Guide: "You want to start right away looking at the possibility of getting some sort of loan modification," said Debra Zimmerman, an attorney with Bet Tzedek Legal Services, a nonprofit that gives free legal advice to homeowners in Los Angeles County. This link takes you to the complete article: www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-covertimeline15-2009feb15,0,1760388.story Modified to add: Debra's also quoted at the end of the companion piece: Attorney Debra Zimmerman at Bet Tzedek Legal Services, a nonprofit that offers free legal help to mortgage holders in Los Angeles County, said that through challenges from her office, a $170,000 loan was reduced to $125,000 and a $439,000 loan went down to $340,000.www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-coveroptions15-2009feb15,0,5333821.story

It's always like Christmas for me when a really juicy story about that old CIA leak investigation gets unwrapped. This comes courtesy of Tom DeFrank at the New York Daily News today. Cheney lobbied hard for Bush to pardon Scooter Libby up to Jan. 19, but the president thought Scooter deserved some punishment -- and he'd just about had enough of being Dicked around: www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/02/16/2009-02-16_exvp_dick_cheney_outraged_president_bush.htmlTom is the last of a dying breed of real newspapermen. His story about Richard Armitage seen leaving the back of the federal courthouse during Scooter's trial helped me figure out that Armitage was Novak's primary source before Michael Isikoff published it.

That was interesting! Thanks, Annie -- my wife the art teacher printed their painting. Today in the news: Your neighbor's dog did not eat some of your newspaper -- the Los Angeles Times has done away with the California and Classified sections.
