NLG-LA MEMBERSHIP MEETING - TOPIC: WHY IS THE GOVERNMENT MONITORING
ACTIVISTS AT THE BORDER? - MAY 7
Leaked US-Mexican government documents [1] revealed both governments are maintaining a secret database targeting at least 59 journalists, activists, and an attorney as part of an intelligence-gathering mission under "Operation Secure Line," based on their work reporting on and offering humanitarian aid to the recent caravans of migrants fleeing from violence and poverty. The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) condemns this practice as a blatant violation of civil liberties and attempt to intimidate those seeking to provide necessary, legal and legitimate aid to migrants and their families. Read NLG's statement here [2].
NLG-LA members are invited to an open board meeting on May 7 where we will focus on the secret database at the border, as well as lawyers who have been denied entry to Mexico. We will hear from Nora Phillips [3] of Al Otro Lado, who was denied entry to Mexico in February (read more here [4]). We will also hear from Ahilan Arulanantham [5], Senior Counsel at ACLU SoCal. All are welcome - bring your friends!

END LAPD WASTE & FRAUD - MAY 6
Join NLG-LA as we support our allies in asking City Council to Drop the DROP retirement program. As Los Angeles advocates continue to fight for our budget priorities, it's hard to ignore the fact that LAPD & LAFD dominates our city's budget with a total of 69% of unrestricted revenues. The LAPD/LAFD retirement program, DROP, that was sold to voters as deficit neutral has cost over $1.7 billion dollars--and though every report indicates this program is not sustainable, it continues. The Budget and Finance Committee will be discussing LAPD/LAFD pensions on Monday, and public comment should be heard near the very top of the agenda at 9am [7]. For more background, you can read this LA Times Board Editorial [8], and for general information on the budget go here [9].
Where: City Hall Room 340, 200 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA
When: Monday, May 6 at 9am

ICE SECURITY PROGRAM ON TRIAL - MAY 7
Join the ACLU of Southern California [10] for opening statements in their trial against ICE on Tuesday, May 7 in federal district court in Los Angeles. ICE has recklessly expanded its deportation dragnet by issuing detainers automatically at the click of a button, through the discredited Secure Communities program. In Gonzalez v. ICE, a nationwide class of people subject to immigration detainers (represented by ACLU SoCal, NDLON, and NIJC) will show that ICE has arrested hundreds of thousands of people, including many U.S. citizens, without probable cause.
Please help pack the court for opening statements on the morning of Tuesday, May 7, and for closing statements on May 16.
If you and others from your orgs/groups can join the ACLU for opening statements on Tuesday, May 7, please contact Andrès.

Where: 350 W. 1st Street, Los Angeles (Room number TBD)
