I was glad that Tulsi Gabbard returned to the stage at tonight's Democratic presidential debate -- until I heard her repeat the rants I've been getting lately in her campaign's e-mail blasts. I contributed when she announced her candidacy. Lately, the tone has turned dark and Trumpian, accusing the Democratic National Committee of rigging the system against her and the media of running fake news about her. For days, she threatened to boycott the debate in protest against the DNC. Now I wish that she had stayed home. Her answers on Syria and abortion were embarrassing.
I have to wonder if she is trying to appeal to voters who supported Ron Paul in the Republican primaries in 2008. They were passionate. Some of them came to the corner to hang out with Montrose Peace Vigil, bearing their signs and conspiracy theories.
I missed the debates but have been watching highlights. Apparently, this one put out by her campaign left that stuff out.

With permission, I nabbed this great post from Justeen (with John B. in Iowa) on FaceBook:Friday October 18, 2019. A true Iowa experience on a visit to Iowa City, Iowa to visit Laurie Peterson Magaraci! We got to meet a presidential candidate in the quaint little town of Sigourney, Iowa. The event for Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota senator running for president, was being held at a little coffee house called Barn Wired. Very cool place. JB and I got front row seats for her stump speech which was excellent! She made a lot of sense, unlike the current resident of the White House.

Yes, we have a lot to be proud of in the many wonderful public servants running against the current occupant.

Tulsi's polling at one percent nationally, putting her among four candidates who may not qualify for next month's debate, including Beto O'Rourke, Julian Castro and my pick Amy Klobuchar. The number of podiums may be reduced from 12 to 8.

2019 Presidential Forum on Environmental Justice
Rosalind and Mike were talking about this forum at the vigil last Friday -- they were listening to it on KPFK before they to got to the corner. Mike was frustrated because the radio station cut off Marianne Williamson's answer to go to another show. Now he can hear it!

I thought that all ten candidates performed well at tonight's Democratic presidential debate. Maybe it's because they've had a lot of practice -- this was the fifth.
Kamala Harris was better than ever, until she took an inexplicable shot at Tulsi Gabbard for appearing on Fox News during the Obama Administration and criticizing the president. As I recall, Obama kept our troops in Afghanistan for 8 of the past 18 years. Many other Democratic elected officials have appeared on Fox News. The pile on continued during the post debate show on MSNBC except, notably, for Chris Matthews. Joy Reid characterized her words as "Kremliny." Looks like Tulsi's shrill e-mails saying that the Democratic establishment is out to destroy her may actually prove to be true. Anyway, I've lodged plenty of criticism at Tulsi in this long thread, but now I'm starting to feel sorry for her. And I cannot figure out what Harris was trying to gain by attacking Tulsi or why she considers Tulsi a threat.
Only 11 weeks remain until the Iowa caucus, yet a huge chunk of the primary electorate hasn't decided on a candidate. Pete Buttigieg keeps gaining in the polls with white, well educated voters but has no traction whatsoever among the most important group, loyal black voters who are sticking with Joe Biden in South Carolina, or the demographic with the most potential, the young people who love Bernie Sanders in every state. I still maintain that Amy Klobuchar would be the best nominee on a ticket with another woman, such as Elizabeth Warren or Kamala Harris, and that she'll contend if she can win, place or show in Iowa.

We watched the 12/19 debates and I was disappointed the candidates continue to attack each other rather than focus on presenting a potential platform of better ideas than the Trump/Pence administration. In a related development, Tulsi Gabbard by voting "present" on impeachment is position herself as a third party candidate. I thinks it's dangerous for the country when Republicans put party over the Constitution and Democrats seem to be putting personal ambition above both. www.yahoo.com/news/tulsi-gabbard-encouraged-by-trump-may-seek-spoiler-role-175507843.html

I agree with Sharon. Perhaps the biggest issue not discussed was homelessness -- at a debate held in the city of Los Angeles. The last Democratic presidential candidate I remember talking about poverty was John Edwards. Twelve years later, more impoverished people are living on the street.
I've been following Tulsi's campaign with increasing perplexity. I thought that when she moved her campaign from Iowa to New Hampshire, she was hoping to appeal to the kind of Republicans and independents who loved Ron Paul in 2008, because they can crossover to vote Democratic in that state's primary. It makes sense, as the Yahoo piece that Sharon linked above speculates, that Tulsi may be aiming to be a third party candidate instead. Anyway, when I got the e-mail blast with her full statement about her "present" vote for impeachment, I read it, found no Constitutional or moral integrity in it whatsoever and unsubscribed from her list.

I agree with everything said here about last week's debates and Tulsi voting "present." I've been really impressed that Tulsi's been the only candidate to address nuclear weapons--which really is an even bigger threat than climate change--but her explanation for voting "present" makes no sense to me. If she was in Nazi Germany, would she avoid being divisive with Hitler supporters? If she became president, maybe she'd decide to continue increasing nuclear weapons to avoid offending war profiteers.
