Both recordings are fabulous even though they were made by two different people apparently who sat in different areas of the audience each night. You couldn't wish for better recordings, they're lovely and I thank these anonymous people. I wouldn't be able to relax and enjoy myself if I had the task of recording a show secretly. On the other hand, my brother says he wouldn't enjoy a show if he wasn't trying to tape it. Go figure.
The Devil You Know, first made a solo appearance at an old Washington Finn Brothers show in 96 in which Tim talked incessantly through the intro until Neil had to tell him to (jokingly) shut up. The next time I know of that Neil pulled this song out of his hat was on the 12 of december 2002 during the Split Enz live webcast from Neil's basement. It came to him in the form of an email request. He did it beautifully and I keep the audio of that performance on my mp3 player.
Of course, he performed Devil You Know at Largo last summer when I was there. Possibly as a result of the crazy lady I sold my spare ticket to's called out request. Fleetingly, I hoped he wouldn't reward her with it by singing it..but he did. And I was very glad. Again, a lovely song...one that is seriously in competition with Love this Life in my mind.
I like how you've put it: "we saw a man taking incredible chances all alone hitting the same notes with greater ability and assurance yet never sacrificing his vulnerability or innocence"
Yes, exactly, who says stretched out vocal cords are a bad thing?
I've seen this Strait Ol Line video before and I have to say that I think both Neil & Eddie smoked a bit of pakalolo before the shooting thereof. This would explain the insane grinning that's going on and Neil's relative grace. Not once do I see him backing into the keyboards, which he was wont to do in any number of video's back then.
