Members of Montrose Peace Vigil in October 2007 at an anti-war march and rally in downtown Los Angeles. I'm pretty sure I was at this march. I remember Ed Asner speaking near the end. It doesn't seem like 13 years ago, though!

Anni, Russell, Berit and Justeen at the Montrose Peace Vigil on June 26, 2020. Now deep into our 15th year of demonstrating at the intersection of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue, Montrose Peace Vigil is still a happening every Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. We're observing all of the pandemic guidelines with much lighter traffic than we're accustomed to, but we're drawing more expressions of support from passersby per capita. Vigil turnout remains good -- we averaged 10 participants per week in July and 14 in June. Before the pandemic, we consistently averaged 12 or 13 demonstrators per week. At least four of our greatest stalwarts have understandably stayed home since the lockdown began in mid-March. Since then, we've gained a few new regulars, like Russell and Berit in the photo above.

The number of Montrose Peace Vigil participants has gone down from the double digits of last summer. We only averaged 8 peaceniks on the corner each Friday in November after averaging 10 in October and 9 in September. At the same time, we're seeing fewer and fewer people on the streets and sidewalks as the Covid infection rates have grown from worse to alarming. The county imposed two sets of pandemic restrictions within five days -- all that's left to slow the spread is another stay at home order and the closure of nonessential businesses like last spring. Political protests are always exempted, so we're not going away. We haven't missed a Friday since Montrose Peace Vigil started in January 2006. Since 2008, I've posted brief weekly reports -- and others add photos and their thoughts -- in these monthly vigil threads in the Montrose Peace Vigil Activities section of this message board: montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/board/2/montrose-peace-vigil-activities

We really admire all of you who are bravely vigiling amidst the pandemic. We turn on the lava lamps in our street facing garden window to illuminate our BLM and Fire Drill Friday signs in support. Vaccine trials are promising so we may be able to join you in person in a few months.

I miss all of the great indoor events that we promoted on this message board before March 2020. Maybe we'll have some again later this year. Meanwhile, we still have the Saturday vigil in Eagle Rock because it's outdoors, along with more online community gatherings than ever before. Here's the link to the first index page of the Community section -- which is also accessible from the homepage -- with threads covering local happenings and resources: montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/board/3/communityFeel free to promote your event there -- even if you are a guest. You do not have to log in or register to post. Just click on the brown Create Thread button on the page linked above.

Since January, the worst month of the pandemic when the average weekly attendance at the Montrose Peace Vigils was only 7 participants, we've added one participant each month. By May, we averaged 11 participants each week, only one less than our longtime historical average of a dozen a week. Another sign that the pandemic has diminished: the Community section of the Montrose Peace Vigil message board has threads for in person events for the first time in 15 months. Buried at the bottom of the homepage is a useful hyperlink -- Recent Posts, copied below -- which shows the latest posts from any thread on this message board, starting with the newest. If you want to read more about a topic, click on the blue title of the post to see the rest of that thread. montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/posts/recent

If you see a post on the Montrose Peace Vigil message board where the author's name is printed in black -- as opposed to blue like mine, which means that a message board member posted -- you're reading something that was added by a guest.
I'm glad to say that we've been getting a lot more guest posts in the past two years. If you would like to promote an event, comment on another post, ask a question or say just about anything, click on Reply in any thread. Or, to start a new topic, click on Create Thread in any of the six departments on the homepage, such as Community or Policy and Politics.
