I'll be leaving for our corner in a little less than one hour...I'm also stopping to blow up the flag (balloon). See you there!

that reminds me.....
is there somewhere you can go to get custom designed balloons?
like...what if you got a bunch with peace symbols and stuff and brought a ton of them to the corner and handed them out to any interested children?

Martine, I really like your idea. Balloons are extremely popular gifts, even uninflated out of the box. I saw that at the Glendale Peace Vigil's booth for Cruise Night in July. I want to follow up on this. Thank you, Sharon, for the information about your vigil and the Crescenta Valley Weekly. And we hope you all can come to Gourmet-a-Go-Go on Friday, Sept. 25, after 7 p.m. -- we've had two great dinners as a group on their patio already. I asked everyone on the corner last night about it and found a lot of interest -- I'll start gathering names for our reservation next week. Only half the participants from last week's vigil returned this Friday, but folks like Bill, Bruce and Chris were back -- and so were three kids. Here's my count since the last Bed-In: - June 5 - 17
- June 12 - 13
- June 19 - 15
- June 26 - 13
- July 3 - 10
- July 10 - 17
- July 14 - 12 (Curveball)
- July 17 - 15
- July 24 - 17
- July 31 - 15
- Aug. 7 - 13
- Aug. 14 - 12
- Aug. 21 - 10
- Aug. 28 - 11
- Sept. 4 - 15
- Sept. 11 - 13
Frozen yogurt has boosted these numbers. Two teenage girls, who were lounging on the bench outside of the shop after their snack, asked us if they could hold signs too. Later, little Cody walked up with her Mom in her soccer uniform, then balanced a yogurt cup with a sign, engaging everybody with her enthusiasm. There is always a future for the peace movement.

i think if you do the balloon thing, you'd want to hand them out inflated, makes more of a visual impact that way.

That sounds like fun. Will report back when I learn about balloons and how they're made!

i think if you do the balloon thing, you'd want to hand them out inflated, makes more of a visual impact that way. Yeah, I knew that's what you meant in your earlier post, Martine. I was trying to say that kids loved balloons even when they weren't inflated -- and many of them at the Glendale booth immediately blew up theirs. Part of me thinks it's cool for the kids to do it themselves and see the image revealed. But I agree with you that it would be fun to hand out helium balloons. Or offer both. Maybe there's some special Montrose event coming up that will draw more youngsters to the corner than usual that we can glom onto. Anni's going to research peace-oriented designs and prices. The message would have to be simple enough for the littlest ones yet palatable to most parents. How do the other Montrose Peace Vigil members feel about balloons?

I am not a fan of handing out helium-inflated balloons, because so many invariable slip out of little hands and float off to create litter and endanger wildlife where they ultimately land. Also the effort/expense to get them inflated.
We probably have enough lung-power among us to inflate balloons the old-fashioned way.
Sounds like a good vigil last week, glad to see Brian's report! See you in person on the 25th, or if you are out and about this afternoon 4:15-5:15 look for us or join us with the peace banners on the 210 footbridge just east of Alta Canyada. (Yes, it does have a y, guess they didn't know about ~.)

I was just sooooo lucky to run into the beautiful and wonderful Karen Z. at our local OSH store. She and Debra are doing well, and miss us at our September Vigils, their lives have been quite Topsy Turvy (fires and work) and after their two week vacation to Canada....maybe they'll be able to add us to their busy schedules???

Hi Roberta! No, I wasn't thinking helium balloons, because that would just add extra cost. If Anni is going to research balloons/designs, perhaps and this may seem like a dumb question, but one never knows unless one asks, does one? Maybe just ask what the most "green" balloon is available? Are there bio-degradeable ones? Can you hand out little recycled paper cards with the balloons reminding the child to have the balloon disposed of in such a way that it doesn't bung up the landfill or cause harm to wild life once they're done with it?

OOOOOOOOUUUUU, Martine, you are so smart! So far all I've found are some cheezy "earth" balloons. I'm not done, yet!
