"Mend an object. As you mend, you mend something inside your soul as well. You mend something in the world as well." Yoko Ono
In the Imagine Peace spirit, War is Over, and - per our last gathering on Friday 8/19/11 - we discussed the idea of getting together weekly as a mending circle. As we no longer need to demonstrate for peace, I suggest that we list the items that we plan to bring each week as we visualize our War is Over Mending Circle.
1. Jeanne said she has a bedspread that her dog chewed to bring.
2. I have shoes to polish -
3. which reminds me that I've really never gotten it together to give myself a pedicure so maybe while my shoes are drying and I'm waiting to buff them, I could get out the pumice stone, file, etc and get my feet all pretty.
4. I also have some teacups with the broken off handles in a container in my kitchen so I could bring some glue and mend those.
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope you'll join us in imagining peace by adding to this list of items to be mended in our War is Over circle .

You most certainly are NOT the only one... AND this is a great idea from Yoko via Nancy...Really good! I'm not ready to go so far as a pedicure yet, but I have a fantastic sewing kit. Also a black, brown, white and natural shoe polish with polishing brush and saddle soap, too. This is brilliant, Nancy! Good sharing!

Thanks Anni. I love "War is over - If you mend." Very cool. Yeah, a pedicure is a pretty big commitment - maybe too much to expect in the beginning - you think? What are you bringing to sew back up? 5. I'm constantly fixing these two summer night gowns after what my washing machine does to them. I've been mending alone but now that War is Over, those nighties are going to be getting some synergistic care - woowie.

I already mended that bedspread at home. And I fixed a broken drawer on my dresser today. I'll keep an eye out for more things in need of TLC. So glad the war's over so we can take care of things.

Nancy, this is the best idea I've heard since, well, since you initiated the Montrose Peace Vigil 40th anniversary tributes to John and Yoko's Bed-Ins two years ago. What a great way to raise consciousness, advertise for peace and engage on another level with all of the pedestrians, dog walkers and yogurt eaters who pass by the corner. War Is Over -- If You Mend.
My serving suggestion: Perhaps the best week to debut the War Is Over Mending Circle would be Friday, Sept. 2 -- Labor Day weekend. That would give us a chance to talk about it with other vigil regulars who don't frequent the message board at Mike's barbecue after this Friday's vigil. I think we should make at least a couple of signs to call attention to the Mending Circle.

You guys sure do mend my heart on an ongoing basis. Love to you, Nancy PS If this happens, let's email Yoko. Of course she may like the conceptual War is Over Mending Circle too - maybe more. I hope Hurricane Irene dissolves into the peace from which she came. Labor day is the perfect time for mending! **War is Sew Over**

At Mike and Elaine's dinner party we came to a general agreement to start the Mending Circle after the Bradley Manning Dinner/Fundraiser on September 9th. (In conjunction with our regular Peace Vigil.) All input, opinions and ideas are welcome, either on the message board or at any Vigil...

Joanne's Fabrics sent me an ad for a sale for September - "National Sewing Month" - so for those who will be demonstrating that "war is sew over," this is the month to do it!

Thanks Nancy and Brian for posting both the Bradley Manning and the War Is Over If You Mend events! I dented my car -- AGAIN!!! -- wish I could mend that at the corner. The print edition of this article had a different picture which showed Sharon Nasella, AKA Mrs. Jim Nasella unless I miss my bet. I'll bring it tomorrow. www.glendalenewspress.com/news/tn-818-0831-elephantdesign,0,3739017.story

The next post will begin another page, so I'll wrap up this one with a few notes about the first War Is Over Mending Circle by Montrose Peace Vigil, set for Friday, Sept. 23, as part of our usual weekly gathering from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue in Montrose, California.
After some planning discussions at last week's vigil, Roberta offered to bring her fold-up table and Anni and I will make a big sign that identifies the happening and gives three inspirational, pertinent quotations.
I propose to list the Mending Circle with Code Pink on their Create, Not Hate calendar of community events leading up to the tenth anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan on October 6. Nancy, would you contact Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace website as you mentioned at the start of this thread? And if Roberta or anyone has more ideas where else we can publicize our activity, I can write the press releases for their formats.
The sun will set at 6:49 p.m. on the 23rd -- much earlier on the corner, of course, because of our beloved Verdugo Hills to the west -- but the light should be great for an hour if not the entire vigil.
