Thank you, Karen Z., for giving us the background on how the traffic counts were done for the Draft Environmental Impact Report and how the good folks of savethegolfcourse.org responded. We always appreciate your contributions to this board -- and invite all nonmembers reading to click on "reply" too. Here's a reminder about the Save the Golf Course fundraiser next Tuesday, Jan. 19, at La Cabanita Mexican Restaurant. If you dine there from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the restaurant will donate 15 percent of your check if you leave it in the box on the way out. One of the better Web pages about La Cabanita that I found: www.yelp.com/biz/la-cabanita-glendaleThis was so helpful I'm putting it at the top of the next page! Looks like a good restaurant...

The next fundraiser is less than two weeks from now at the Montrose Bowl, 2334 Honolulu Ave. in Montrose, on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 6 to 11 p.m. From the latest savethegolfcourse.org webpage: Time to hit the lanes, 'striking' a blow in our efforts to 'spare' the VHGC! Each adult who donates $50.00 ($25 for kids under 12) will receive a pair of bowling shoes (for temporary use), a selection from a wide array of highly experienced bowling balls (again, for temporary use), and the opportunity to apply your skills on any one of the eight lanes at the Montrose Bowl. Food will be provided. No host bar for beverages. Raffles and surprises will round out this evening of fun and camaraderie on behalf of the VHGC. One more reminder from me about the fundraiser at the Montrose Bowl this Saturday evening, Feb. 6, sponsored by Glendale-Crescenta VOICE (Volunteers Organized In Conserving the Environment). Details are on their PDF flier: www.gcvoice.org/pdf/fundraising/MontroseBowl2010.pdfThanks to VOICE for their latest Email Blast on Monday providing the link to a wonderful article about the Japanese detention center that opened the day after the Pearl Harbor attack on the site of the Verdugo Hills Golf Course. This was posted online last September in Rafu Shimpo, Los Angeles Japanese Daily News: rafu.com/news/?p=4693

I remember that there had been speculation that the Final Environmental Impact Report might come out this month, but after tripping through the links on VOICE's savethegolfcourse.org site -- whose homepage is currently a bit of a mess -- I read that "as of March 8, 2010, we do not expect the FEIR to be released to the public before May." The last E-mail Blast I received from the group was Feb. 1, before the bowling fundraiser, so I broke down and scrolled through their initial Facebook page, which goes back to Feb. 2. Nothing really remarkable there either, except for the photo of our friend Michael Crosby among the 364 Fans. The impetus for this post was my drive home from the dentist in Pasadena after work, along Tujunga Canyon Boulevard by the golf course, where I hadn't been for months during daylight. The neat vertical mini-towers of rocks on the vacant land near Pali Avenue are still intact -- yesterday, they were wearing green shirts, I assume for St. Patrick's Day. Christo comes to Tujunga. Does anyone know if there's any connection to VOICE in the demonstration or who is responsible for the sculptures?

Richard Stewart is the creator, aka 'the Bandito', who has been putting smiles on faces of motorists passing by on Tujunga Canyon Blvd. For more information visit TheFoothillsForum.Com: www.thefoothillsforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5736About half way down the first page there is a video of the Bandito! VOICE cannot take any credit for what Richard has created. As TFF.com thread indicates a lot of folks have really enjoyed the Bandito's creations. As with the Draft EIR the date of release depends on when the developer's consultants complete their work. The DEIR was originally expected early 2009. It was released to the public in May or June 2009. Similarly we originally heard the FEIR might be ready by March 2010. However, based on what we have heard recently the earliest we now anticipate its release is May, but it likely could be later. Brian, please let me know what problems you encountered on the SaveTheGolfCourse.Org website. Please email me the url/urls that don't look right. I use various browsers to test pages before uploading but sometimes goofs slip through. You can email me at: info@savethegolfcourse.org And thank you for continuing to follow the VHGC! P.S. Regarding the Rafu newspaper article - fans of Save the VHGC Facebook page have posted some additional articles about the Tuna interment camp.

I never would have found that thread by myself. And for everybody else who's curious about the Bandito Art Park -- or just enjoys seeing real characters depicted well -- I have to embed the You Tube video here. As a Foothills Forum member wrote, "Looks just like a Huell Howser segment!" Art, whether good or bad, can make you think and feel many different things. And test your perceptions: I had assumed that the yardwork was a consciousness raising feat linked to VOICE's Save the Golf Course campaign. Weren't some of their signs posted there during the Draft EIR comment period? Still, I believe that the ever changing installation blows some good karma onto the land we want to save.

Thanks for sharing all of that, Brian. I say two thumbs up for anything makes us smile, and driving by El Bandito's field definitely makes me smile. Here's a quick update regarding the VHGC: As of Monday, April 5th the City of LA planning dept. has not received the working papers for the Final Environmental Impact Report. We've been told it will be at least six to eight weeks after they have those final work papers in hand before the final document is ready for publication. As with the release of the Draft EIR, timing is dependent upon when the developer's consultants have completed their work. In the case of the FEIR we surmise the amount of letters submitted last summer, pointing out the deficiencies of the DEIR, could be contributing to the time it takes for the consultants to respond. They are suppose to address all of the issues we raised. Time will tell. Speaking of time...next Monday, April 12th has been declared 'Let's meet up at Tee's on the Green' Day. Tee's on the Green is the new snack bar at the Verdugo Hills Golf Course. The new owners, Tiffany and Matt, have really spurced it up. If you are available and would like to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner...or even a mid afternoon snack...stop by Tee's on the Green. This isn't a fundraiser it's a way to welcome Tiffany and Matt, and also check out what they have to offer. For more info about Tee's on the Green visit: www.facebook.com/pages/Save-the-Verdugo-Hills-Golf-Course/251085423613?v=photos&ref=mf#!/album.php?aid=150752&id=251085423613

They are suppose to address all of the issues we raised. Time will tell. We're grateful to Karen Z. for giving the Montrose Peace Vigil message board the latest about the Save the Verdugo Hills Golf Course campaign even before the Glendale-Crescenta VOICE's E-Mail Blast went out last week. Two groups affiliated with the cause have events on Commerce Avenue on Saturday, April 24: The Sunland-Tujunga Alliance is sponsoring a fundraiser for the golf course at Gobble Green, a new restaurant at 10045 Commerce Avenue in Tujunga. You can dine either in Gobble Green’s trendy indoor restaurant or on its lovely outdoor patio.
The delicious vegan brunch is "all you can eat" for only $13 per person (to be paid in cash at the door). The brunch menu includes oatmeal, fruit salad, “sausage & cheese” biscuits, whole wheat and blueberry pancakes, as well as orange juice, coffee, and hot tea. Gobble Green will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the fundraiser. The brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Reservations are recommended, but walk ins are welcome. You can e-mail mira@gobblegreen.com -- or phone (800) 684-7618 to leave a message. Afterwards, consider a stroll down to the alley in the next block: The Little Landers Historical Society is having their annual 'Plant Sale' the same day, April 24, from 9am to 1pm, just down the street from Gobble Green. Enjoy both events and benefit the Little Landers and the Verdugo Hills Golf Course.

Thank you, Brian, for posting the update. One of the most rewarding parts during the last few weeks is the number of first time visitors to the VHGC. Like me, many of the supporters are not golfers, so many have not actually seen the VHGC up close and personal. We've enjoyed it from afar - from the freeway, from La Tuna Canyon or Tujunga Canyon Blvd., or Honolulu.
During Earth Week several more newcomers made a point of going over to the golf course and getting a look while taking pictures or getting some lunch at Tee's on the Green. They weren't disappointed!
