Jeanne forwarded an e-mail to me tonight from Peace Action West with a link to send your custom letter to Senators Boxer and Feinstein calling on them to cut the worst kind of carnitas -- $1 billion for nukes -- in the economic recovery act: act.peaceactionwest.org/peaceactionwest/issues/alert/?alertid=12607681I'd like to know who's responsible for porking the stimulus in such an obscene way, but that might take more than 15 minutes on the Internets, so I'll search another night.

Rats. I had a feeling that the date of March 21st for the Beatles Tribute picnic at Descanso which I just posted rung a bell re something else. It is also the date of the next ANSWER march. ANSWER Coalition Announces ... March on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Coordinated with Marches in Los Angeles & San Francisco March 21, 2009: 6th Anniversary of the Iraq Invasion www.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ANSWERLAwww.pentagonmarch.org/

Rats is right. Anni and I were talking about going after you posted -- we've never seen a Beatles tribute band and I haven't been to Descanso in years. But thanks for the reminder of the ANSWER LA march, Roberta. Onto the calendar it went. In case you didn't get yours, Code Pink sent their latest e-mail yesterday morning with a link to petition George Mitchell to visit Gaza the next time he's in the neighborhood: salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/424/t/8434/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=1837I'm the 1712th signer.

It is so gratifying when one of our action campaigns succeeds, makes me feel that online peace activism IS possible, even useful. Here's part of a message from Peace Action West saying that their recent effort paid off: Dear Roberta, Congratulations. You just saved taxpayers $1 billion in nuclear weapons pork. I just got word that, with your help, we eliminated $1 billion in wasteful spending for the nuclear weapons complex from the economic stimulus bill. Thousands of you wrote and called your senators, and even sent letters to the editor. Thank you for an amazing victory! Our momentum is real, and the opportunity for change unprecedented. Will you join our campaign for a nuclear weapons free world with your message to the president today? capwiz.com/peaceactionwest/utr/1/GXAFJVUCYG/JLQLJVURFV/2923073201

I've never suffered under any delusion that Buck or anyone on his staff reads my e-mails, but look at this in today's Los Angeles Times on the front page of the California section: www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-wilderness-magic_mountain-2009feb15,0,2396358.story My favorite part: "I literally had to get a map out," [Buck's chief of staff] said. "I called the congressman. He said, 'Where is it?' I said, 'Remember where you lived for all those years? Look out the window and you'd see it.' After we saw the place, it was an easy sell."
If you've driven Angeles Forest Highway (not Crest, but county road N-3 to Palmdale), you've passed this site. It starts with a fenced-off road going north from the side of the road opposite the picnic grounds at Mill Creek Summit, which my friends and I called the Vortex for dozens of happy visits in my teens and 20's. The original bill passed the Senate 73-21.

Hi peaceniks, This is a project of the American Friends Service Committee. I think it is especially important to hold feet to the fire about Iraq now with the mini-surge in Afghanistan already announced to begin, even before the troops in Iraq come home. www.countdowntowithdrawal.org/
