not that Los Angeles has been holding it's breath or anything for the last 17 years (the last time I stepped foot there) I am finally planning a return trip.
the credit for this lies squarely with brian and anni who have never quit bugging encouraging me to come and visit them.
so..a trip for mid-August has been booked and apparently I am allowed to pick one or two really touristy things/places to do/see..but i guess i would welcome any suggestions! ;D

Martine's right. We've been bugging her to come from Winnipeg and hang out with us since we first got together in person during the Finn Brothers tour in February 2005. We'd known her on the Internets two or three years before that. I thought Martine should see Crowded House at the Greek Theater in 2007, but she opted for a better venue and lots of relatives in Northern California.
The Finn Brothers only played in Solana Beach and San Juan Capistrano that time so Martine missed L.A. County entirely. On the phone last weekend, she said she wants to go back to Hollywood. She'll appreciate the new Hollywood Highland complex -- although most of us can say it's even more fun to get there walking down the middle of Hollywood Boulevard without cars -- and not just because she likes shopping. Our city looks and feels different than it did in 1992 in so many ways. Also, we had no Amoeba Records then.
Anyway, we have two months to talk about ideas. Martine will be here six full days, from Aug. 19 to 24. One thing I'm doing is keeping my eyes open for concerts, theater or special events on those dates that might interest her.

Yes Anni, my stay does include one Friday...see you on the corner ;D Here is a possible list of things: -Amoeba Records -check out the new Largo (I just want to see it) -Universal Studio (??) -Jean Harlow (??) -that Hollywood Highland complex thingie -is the Roosevelt Hotel still open? Is there a coffee shop to hang out in? -further to Jean Harlow--if I can find the address to her house..can we do a drive by if it's not in a gated community? -Charlie Chaplin's studio? I think it's a recording studio now. -just hang out and chill (chill being used as a verb, not a descriptive, in LA, in August, apparently) -What other groovy things are there to do? Is anyone going to alert the paparazzi that I'm coming? Please--if anyone else has any thoughts or ideas, please post them!! I'm totally open to suggestions.

Isn't Muscle Beach part of Venice Beach? From there we could drive north into Santa Monica, with its pier and nearby shopping, through Malibu up to Leo Carrillo beach, a relatively unspoiled state park near the Ventura County line, or so I felt the last time I was there (which was 1979), assuming it's not closed like the Governator proposes by then.
Martine, most of the destinations you list in Hollywood are within marching distance of each other. We could see those and more in a day if we don't grow roots in Amoeba, which is always fun for me. The refurbished Roosevelt has become a hip hotel with a nightclub where Prince played for a week. Charlie Chaplin's old stomping grounds might be closed to the public. We can check. Are you interested in the wax museum? Capitol Records building? The old Largo with Canter's across the street and Anni's old apartment around the corner by the newsstand?
We could also visit Universal Studios, the adjacent City Walk and new NBC Studios, but that would have to be for another day.
I'll post more ideas and questions this weekend.
