If Jean Harlow IS located, please include me in the visit! Martine knows where her final resting place is -- she e-mailed me this link to a page on a long-established, award-winning Jean Harlow fansite: lisaburks.typepad.com/jeanharlow/forest_lawn/Our friend in Winnipeg was concerned about getting kicked out of Forest Lawn Glendale like the author of that page, but I've been there so much that I don't think that's possible, especially if I'm wearing my suit and Roberta's with us. Martine, when you're ready, post the address of Jean's house and I'll check out its accessibility. (Aside to Jeanne: Anni and I are interested in the workshop and dinner on the 19th. I see that we have until July 1 to take advantage of the cheaper early registration. This week, I'll make sure that we're free then post a reply in the Ahimsa thread. Thanks!)

First I'd have to decide which house. The Paul Bern death house or Jean's house...I'm sort of leaning towards her house, the Bern house would be too sad.
I'll have a snoop around the website, my various books and come up with an addr, thanks brian.

That would be great if you could come, Brian and anni. Maybe we could find a better approach for the flag issue at the corner.

Martine, we would gladly spend two days in Hollywood with all there is to do and see. The Auto Club's magazine arrived today and reminded me that July marks the 75th anniversary of the Farmer's Market, only two blocks from the old Largo and Canter's, which you probably already know about and may have visited in 1992. Since then, they built the Grove on the old parking lots -- in case you haven't heard, it may be a great destination if you want to shop: www.thegrovela.com/Next to the Grove is CBS Television City, where my old friend Jimmy works as a cameraman. Late one evening, he took me around security through the crew's break room on a tour of the sets of two soap operas that were still shooting before he sat me in the second row of "Real Time with Bill Maher" behind Bill's date. Oh, on the way we went backstage so Jimmy could introduce me as "the white Brian Anderson" to the show's stagehand, an African American in his 30's who has the same name as me. I think Maher is on hiatus in August, but Jimmy may still work on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," which doesn't announce his guests more than three weeks in advance. I'll watch the schedule for any you might enjoy. Jimmy can also get us tickets for any show shot at Television City if something else interests you, including "The Price Is Right" with Drew Carey, a serious champion of Ian Hunter.

I know you can't go by the weather each week, but we're having a mild summer so far with no temperatures over 100 degrees -- sorry, Martine, I'm a stupid American who still can't convert to Celsius. The worst heat I remember last summer was around June 21 when we saw Fee Waybill perform in Shadow Hills and it didn't drive us out of the house.
Anni got the swamp cooler refurbished and it's humming along fine this holiday mid-afternoon as the big thermometer outside reads 87.
This is our fifth summer in this house and I've never seen so much wildlife after sunset. We're four big blocks from the chaparral yet our backyard is teeming with bats, raccoons and possums. Even a hawk has built a nest in the eucalyptus tree! And I've had four coyote sightings there -- seen three of them jumping our neighbor's fence last week -- in as little time as I spend outdoors. How many have I missed?

We did not visit the Farmer's market in 92 and I would love to go. I would love to go to Canters as I've heard you speak of it fondly a number of times and it would be keen to see the old Largo.
I spoke to a fellow last week (who visited LA for two days a few years ago, so he's an expert, apparently) and he said if we want tickets to Conan, we should be trying for them now. I think it would be cool, but would not be heartbroken if we didn't do it. Your "other Brian Anderson" story is hilarious--I think I've heard you tell this before. If I got to see Drew Carey in person, I'd be a star attraction at home--my boys loved the Drew Carey show and we all adored his improv show.
Is August usually very very hot in LA? 87 F is fairly hot, Brian, probably 35 C or somewhere in there--hot, but not totally I want to kill myself oppressive hot. No, that would be..104 F.
I don't think I have ever seen a bat (in person) I may have to scream, just so you know.
Coyotes jumping over a fence would totally freak me out. I'm sure I'd make a pretty good meal. ((yikes)))

((yikes))) Oh no, dear Martine. You are way too tall for any coyote to think of you as scrumptious...fact is we're lucky just to catch a glimpse of their kind...

Let's skip Conan and try for Drew Carey. Jimmy's told me many times that he can get me and my guests into Television City anytime without going through channels (and no pun intended). I'll contact him soon. Please remember that 87 degrees in Tujunga does not feel like Winnipeg. I've been to Chicago and Boston when it was that temperature and suffered because of the humidity. Repeat after me, Martine: It's a dry heat. It can get humid when tropical moisture comes from Mexico, but nothing like back east. Yes, August is our hottest month, but we can top 90 any month of the year. When were you in L.A. in 1992 and what was the weather like? By the way, I'm depressed that the Los Angeles Times reduced its weather page to half a page today -- and cut out Winnipeg. Last I read, it was 72 and humid there.

Drew Carey would be fab, or anything, I've not been inside a tv studio since college. Dry heat is always better than humid heat, that's for sure. Believe it or not, we were in Palm Desert in July--the place was deserted (all the smart folk, we were told, were in Colorado--LOL) We sat outside for lunch when it was 105 F -and there was "outdoor" conditioning--some kind of mechanism attached to the patio umbrella that gave off a fine mist of water, I had a Long Island Iced Tea in a terrarium bowl and cannot recall ever being so drunk (Hey, I was young--32 ish)
If you want to check Winnipeg weather, Brian, just go to cbc.ca or something and click on the weather link, although, I know it's nice to be able to find it in your newspaper, I always check LA weather and notice that sometimes we're warmer in the early morning than you guys.
