I must say that we haven't looked very hard for Canadian cigarettes while Martine has been in Tujunga and Montrose, nor while driving around the Westside with us since Monday, but we learned that Hollywood Boulevard's the absolute worst place. Most of the so called smoke shops sold no cigarettes at all.
Nonetheless, we had a fabulous Saturday that took in dining at Musso and Frank's, thoroughly enjoying Madame Tussaud's and browsing and buying at Amoeba, of course. At the restaurant, ask for Craig to be your waiter. I'm on record saying I expected the wax museum to be worthwhile yet I was stunned by some of the likenesses. Martine clued us into the Madame's historical significance -- she has visited her museums in London and Paris -- and we thanked her statue on the way out.

Actually, I've visited the London and Victoria (BC) (Canada) museum's, not Paris (I wish!) Wax musuems can be kinda creepy--but that's the ultimate compliment to the creators of the figures--if they creep you out, it must be because they're so lifelike--the Robert DeNiro one last night almost gave me a heartattack.
Another thing is, we learned that most of the "current crop" of celebrities actually sat for the artists so the measurements and moulds of faces and hands (and bums, in JeLo's case LOL) could be taken and be most accurate. The figures of people like Clark Gable, Bette Davis, while astonishing likenesses, were not quite as creepy (ie, lifelike) as I'm thinking the creators worked from photographs only.
I was also very surprised by how tall some of these people are/were. I knew Jimmy Stewart was tall, but holy cow, I only came up to his nipple!! And someone like Selma Hayek, Penelope Cruz--such tiny tiny girls! (All us tiny girls are cute, it's our personalities that are huge)
And there is a beautiful figure of Mme Tussuad herself, I was completely enchanted by it. Her death mask was on display and I figure she was in her late 80s when she passed away, the full body figure that was in display (to depict her, say circa 1790) was exquisite--based on her face at death, the artists that created this figure made a very beautiful depiction of her at around 30, accurate as far as bone structure and colouration with a bit of artistic license.
I love a good wax musuem.
Thanks to brian and anni, i got my jean harlow fix and was able to visit all her footprints, stars in the sidewalk and her face in a big mural on the side of a building. I have to confess to being a little silly at the footprint site and got a little emotional about it, having been an admirer of hers for over 35 years now.
The dinner at Musso and Franks was fabulous taking us right back in time...I wouldn't have been surprised at all if Lana Turner and Gary Cooper had walked in and taken the booth next to us. Waitstaff were very professional and attentive.
Amoeba Records--well hello--I've never been in a record store the size of Walmart before, my interest in music is relatively narrow and I thought I had every cd I ever wanted but I was wrong! I don't know how I"m going to pack all these treasures to get them home!
The whole trip has been beyond my expectations in a lot of ways and am constantly surprised at how kind and friendly and helpful people are (not just anni & brian, but almost every single person I've met while here) I sort of thought in a place like this that people would be in a hurry and not be noticing but it's just not true. People will still take the time to smile at you and listen to you and while I've been in California a couple times now, I finally feel at home here.
Peace out Montrose Peace Vigil-ers ;D

What a lovely note about Southern California. Thanks! It was an unexpected pleasure to meet you with Brian and Anni at our Trader Joe's the other day.
I must say, I've always enjoyed wonderful Canadian hospitality when visiting north of the border too. My family took vacations there several times over the years and Bill and I spent three months exploring the Woods and River Route on our sabbatical in 1997. We took our little travel trailer from west to east, even across the then new Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island. We met wonderful people all along the way.
The ties go even further back. My Swedish grandmother was an illegal alien, walked down to Fargo, ND from Winnepeg when she couldn't into the USA through Ellis Island due to filled quotas back in the 1890s.
Anyway, I'm glad you had a good time here.
